Youth Sport Trust - Sport Changes Lives How we work Influence government & national strategy Campaign on behalf of PE and School Sport Develop interventions, training and products to enhance the quality of PE and school sport Work locally through a school based strategy Youth Sport Trust (YST) is a cutting edge development agency with expertise in Sport, Health, Physical Education and Raising Achievement. Sport Changes Lives’ – still put YP at the heart of everything we do. YST brings together sport and education / PE and sport supports whole school improvement Our niche is the positioning of sport in the context of young people’s education and development in the broadest sense. The Youth Sport Trust supports schools to use sport to raise standards, achievement and attainment across all subject areas. It is our belief that PE and school sport can make a major contribution to many agendas – educational achievement, public health, community cohesion and, of course, sporting performance at the highest level How we work Lead strategic agency for PE and School Sport Influence government & national strategy Campaign on behalf of PE and School Sport Develop interventions, training and products to enhance the quality of PE and school sport Work locally through a school based strategy

Youth Sport Trust Sporting Start We work to give every child a sporting start in life through high quality PE and sport in primary schools.

Government announcement: Sport Premium PHYSICAL EDUCATION DELIVERED During curriculum time BY Secondary schools (Specialist PE teacher) Primary (Classroom teacher) HEALTHY ACTIVE LIFESTYLES DELIVERED Outside curriculum time BY SGOs, teachers, leaders and coaches, health workers COMMUNITY PROVISION Pay and play Leisure and recreation activities Other measures announced Renewed funding for the Young Ambassadors programme. Reform of initial teacher training. Funding for coaching and volunteering programmes, and those designed to improve the delivery of sport for young people with a disability. £1.5 million from Sport England to enable County Sports Partnerships to support National Governing Bodies of Sport to provide specialist sports coaching in schools. COMPETITIVE SCHOOL SPORT DELIVERED Outside curriculum time BY SGOs , TR posts, teachers young volunteers and coaches CLUB SPORT (NGBs) Clubs and teams Coaching Talent development THE CURRENT PE AND SPORT LANDSCAPE – the circled area identifies where you could spend your £9000 to make the maximum impact. PE – education through the physical delivered by teachers in curriculum time - is the foundation upon which everything else is built PE is king - Fundamental foundation on which future participation and performance in sport and active lifestyles is built. Many benefits will be gained through a focus on ensuring high quality physical education at primary school. At primary level where Physical Education is delivered by non Physical Education specialists the priority must be to build on the teaching skills of classroom teachers. We need to support primary practitioners and provide them with the best teaching strategies to create a dynamic and enjoyable PE experience for younger pupils. Physical Education While sport has much to contribute to the development of physical literacy, it must be recognised this is only one aspect of Physical Education.  Focus must be on giving teaching staff further expertise in developing physical literacy and the breadth of learning within physical education A child should develop a broad and balanced appreciation of sport and movement, understand the importance of healthy lifestyles, and social and cognitive development (improved self confidence, understanding of teamwork and the development of leadership skills) NGB's/ sports professionals and coaches can, and do make a significant contribution to school sport  which should extend and enrich the Physical Education curriculum……but not replace it! It is imperative that we build the knowledge, skills and confidence of teaching staff to help them to deliver engaging PE and School Sport Healthy Active Lifestyles Healthy behaviours in childhood and the teenage years set patterns for later life. If acquired early, the experience and expectation of sport and exercise, could be such a life long asset! Obesity is the greatest driver for increasing physical activity as nearly a quarter of all reception aged children and one third of year 6 pupils are overweight or obese (National Child Measurement Programme 2010). Physical inactivity costs the NHS approximately £1.8bn per annum and inactivity causes 9% of premature mortality which is equal to the same number of deaths as tobacco. ( The Lancet 2012) Equipping young people with the confidence and competence to begin a positive, sustained interest in physical activity and sport is vital and this will only come from a strong foundation of physical literacy developed through HQPE Enjoyment, Engagement and Exercise The focus needs to be on enjoyment and offering a breath of appealing activities in a young people centred environment, to engage the less active A gradual introduction to physical exercise, as opposed to competitive sport, will create behaviour change This should start with a smooth and accessible transition from the PE curriculum to extra curricular activities Appropriate community sport is critical to sustain interest and involvement PE School Sport
