The current state of PE Purpose of self reflection What is the Qualitymark? What is the Sainsbury’s School Games Mark? What will I do next?

3 Ofsted report – Primary PE
Teachers lack of detailed subject knowledge Superficial lesson planning and limited use of assessment Not enough opportunities for pupils to participate and compete in school sport No strategy to improve the health and wellbeing of all pupils Primary schools should expect that Ofsted will be looking at the way they are tackling the common weaknesses as identified in the most recent inspection survey report of the overall effectiveness of PE, Beyond 2012 – outstanding physical education for all (2013). Whilst this report found that PE was good or outstanding in two thirds of the 120 primary schools visited it identified a number of common weaknesses in primary PE including:

Schools should: ensure that their strategic plans for using the new funding include clear, measurable targets for improvement clearly show how school leaders will evaluate the impact that the premium is having on improving PE and sports provision regularly monitor the work of specialist PE teachers and sports coaches to ensure that their teaching and coaching are consistently good ensure that the professional development of staff is systematically planned and tailored to the individual needs of teachers and classroom assistants monitor the impact of professional development to ensure a lasting legacy of consistently good teaching of PE identify ‘non-participants’ in extra-curricular sport and provide additional activities to encourage their immediate and longer-term participation in sport and physical activity introduce activities specifically aimed at enabling their most able pupils to achieve high standards in PE and sport

Examines current practice in 5 focus areas: the overall vision for PE, physical activity and school sport; the quality of PE; the quality of school sport; the quality of physical activity; and the use of PE, physical activity and sport as a catalyst for wider learning

“Although most of the schools visited were using the premium in effective ways, some common weaknesses were noted. Strategic planning was generally poor. Monitoring and evaluation of the impact of actions to improve the provision of PE and sports were not rigorous enough. For example, too often, teachers’ professional development was not planned thoroughly. Additionally, there were often no means of evaluating the impact of actions taken to improve teachers’ effectiveness in teaching PE.” Talk about importance of evidence, not enough to have an instinct, next activity will focus on possible sources of evidence to help them

13 The Sainsbury’s School Games Mark
Owned and created by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and is implemented and developed by the Youth Sport Trust and Sport England. The Mark rewards school for their commitment to and the development of competition, school sport and physical education and was first launched in June 2012 All schools in England who are registered on can apply So what is the kitemark? Key stage 2 onwards A national accreditation for schools who are committed to the ethos of the Sainsbury’s School Games. A recognition for schools who are pro active in developing PE & School Sport. A national award that Ofsted are aware of. A tool to help support & develop PE & School Sport provision. The gold level is not designed to be easy to achieve, it is designed to be a highly regarded mark of outstanding practice. Key focus is on Competition and School sport rather than PE – Quality mark sits here.

14 Benefits of the Mark Part of the National Agenda of the Sainsbury’s School Games. Recognised by Ofsted Promotes sporting success to the community & parents. Links in with the key aspects of the sports premium funding. Recognition of a schools hard work and commitment to PE & School Sport. Engages pupils in decision making for PE & School Sport.

15 Ofsted ‘ the inspectors liked the fact that we have gained the bronze mark’ ‘Using the mark we were able to show evidence of participation and provide a clear vision from where we can improve’ Feedback from a schools who have been Ofsteded. This is one way you can demonstrate to the inspectors that you have reviewed where your competitive sport is and looked at how to move it forwards. It will give you evidence to show them that you are focussing the premium funding in the areas identified by your school as a priority. The kitemark as you can see is being recognised by Ofsted.

16 The Levels Gold, Silver and Bronze level of award
Participation – PE and Extra Curricular Competition - Intra and Inter Workforce – Leading Managing and Officiating Clubs – Silver and Gold. The award focuses on: Participation Competition Workforce Clubs The criteria for each level in each category increasingly get harder.

17 Criteria – Pre-requisites
In order to achieve the mark all schools must have: Register on the School Games website A system in place to track participation in the Sainsbury’s School Games Opportunities that attract less active young people to participate in Physical Activity Sainsbury’s school Games Day Calendar of competition A notice board promoting Sainsbury School Games Activities Your SGOs can help you to register on the SG website. You could use C4L clubs to engage the less active young people – bags of equipment available School Games day is your current sports day if you have one with a few tweaks (covered later)

The application window for the 2014/15 award is open on 3 June 2014 and will run through until 30 September 2014 Schools receive the Mark logo, certificate, pennant and letter of congratulations from Government departments.

19 Your SGOs can also help you.
Now is the time to start looking at the criteria so if there are things you are not doing if you have capacity you can add them in to ensure you reach the level of kitemark that you want.
