Monday Coolgrrl: Guess what I did on Saturday? SlyKid: U met the President? Coolgrrl: No. Got tix to Kelly Clarkson at the Dome for my B-day. SlyKid: Last concert I wanted to go to was an hour away. Couldnt get my brother to drive me. Coolgrrl: Oh, the Dome is only about 10 min. from my house I almost could have walked. SlyKid: Whod U go with? Should I be jealous?

Coolgrrrl: No. Just Krista and Heather SlyKid: BTW, Happy B-day. How many candles? Coolgrrrl: 12. The cake was awesome. My mom spelled out Angie with chocolate chips. SlyKid: Wish I could have seen that. I didnt get a cake when I turned 14 last month. Coolgrrrl: ohhhh…thats sad….Moms home. Gotta run. SlyKid: Later.

Wednesday Slykid: Where U been? Missed ya yesterday. Coolgrrrl: Soccer game. Slykid: Really, I play too. #6 for the Franklin Cougars. Coolgrrrl: Thats funny. Im #7 for the Jefferson Wildcats. Two presidents. Two cats. Slykid: We lost our game. Coolgrrl: Bummer…

What do you think? Is Coolgrrrl using the Internet safely?

If you said no, youre right. After just three conversations SlyKid now knows a lot about Coolgrrrl. Her name is Angie. She is 12 years old. She lives close to the Dome. To find out where exactly that is, all he would have to do is look up Kelly Clarksons concert tour schedule. She is home alone until 6:00 p.m. She goes to Franklin Middle School She is on the school soccer team and her number is 7.

On the Internet people can describe themselves any way they want. SlyKid might describe himself as a 8 th grade student, but he really could be a 44-year-old man. If SlyKid is a bad guy and he lives in Angies area or can get there, he could easily find out her soccer schedule, identify her during a game, and follow her home. Angie has unknowingly put herself at risk. Source: Current Health 1, November 2002, Vol. 26 Issue 3, p28, 1p.

Tips for Staying Safe on the Internet 1.Dont give out your name, your phone number or address 2.Never give your password to anyone but your parents 3.If some one sends you an or an IM that makes you feel uncomfortable, dont respond 4.Never talk to anyone on the phone who you have met online 5.Never agree to meet in person with someone youve met online 6.Never accept gifts from someone you have met online 7.Do not post a picture of yourself or complete a profile of yourself online

The Internet is a valuable tool for locating information and communicating with others. Its benefits far outweigh the risks…but be AWARE…. Anytime you get several million people together, some of them are bound to be weird. You should not be scared to use the Internet, but you should be AWARE!

AUP Acceptable Use Policy West Salem school district has an AUP that all students must follow. Failure to follow the policy could result in loss of computer privileges or school suspension

Be polite and courteous. TYPING IN ALL CAPS, MEANS YOU ARE SHOUTING! Dissing or slamming others is wrong! Its called flaming. Misrepresenting yourself (pretending to be some one else) can lead to serious consequences. Hacking into someone elses computer system or purposely sending viruses to someone can get you into a whole heap of trouble!

Terms URL An Internet Address Electronic mail that you send to someone that they open and read IMStands for Instant Messaging users can type back a forth just like they are having a conversation Chat RoomA group discussion where you enter the chat room to talk about a particular thing. It could be just a social group or could be a discussion about a certain hobby, etc. SpamBulk that is sent to a lot of people, its like junk mail

VirusesA program that can make you computer not work very well. Viruses are easily spread from forwarded s and attachments. BlogsThese are web logs or diaries. The problem occurs when people give away too much information.
