Even if you don’t have a computer at home you probably have a friend who does, the public libraries do, and your school does.

The Internet is a fun place to spend time, but we also need to be careful.
Just like your mom and dad follow rules when they drive a car on the road to be safe, you follow rules on the Internet to be safe.
I am going to show you some videos that will help teach you about how to be safer on the Internet.

How big is the Internet and is it part of the real world? Answer: The Internet is very big but it is not the real world. The real world is made up of places like your school and your neighborhood. The real world has people who live in it like you and your teacher. The Internet is different from the real-world because it exists on computers. These computers are connected together that let’s people talk and share information with each other. Information like this picture of a banana slug. Real people use the Internet but imagine if people tried to live inside their computers. That is just silly. That’s why the Internet isn’t a real place. It’s a tool people use to get information.
What are the good things on the Internet? Answer: The banana slug is good because it’s funny. Molly uses the Internet to learn…to read stories, play games, and watches videos.
Is the Internet just made for kids? Answer: Only some of the Internet is made for kids. There are pictures and other things that kids really shouldn’t see. There are places on the Internet where people say mean things about each other. These places aren’t fun. And, they are not safe for kids. If you follow some simple rules, kids can avoid them. There are places in your neighborhood that aren’t safe (e.g., look both ways before crossing a street; don’t talk to strangers or accept candy from them). These rules are simple and they can keep you safe in the real world.

You may not realize it but Molly’s address and phone number are considered personal information. Even her full name which she writes on her school homework is considered personal information. Personal information is anything that identifies where you live and who you are. You have personal information too. Here are some examples of personal information. Your name, your address, your phone number, and your address. This information identifies you. And, sometimes people you don’t know can use that information to trick you or to put you into uncomfortable situations. That is why it is important to never give out your personal information to anyone you don’t know. And, you should only give this information out to people who you can trust like your parents and your teachers. Personal information is your private property. (e.g., castle)

Molly knows that it is important to treat other people how she she liked to be treated. Good manners and kindness are just as important on the Internet as they are in the real world. People you might talk or play with on the Internet have feelings just like your friends at school. That is why it is important to be friendly with them. And, when everyone is respectful and nice on the Internet it makes the Internet safer and more for you and Molly.

Alex is a kid who is in this next video who gets bullied.

23. Cyber-bullies are No Fun (2 min 19 sec)
One sixth grader nicknamed Big Mike is a big bully. Sure enough, Big Mike comes up to him and starts picking on him, calling him names and making fun of him. Alex is scared but he knows what to do. He imagines he is a courageous super hero and runs and tells the sixth grade teacher about it.
Did you know that you have to watch out for bullies on the Internet too? Kids who sent mean text messages or s or taunts kids on web sites are called cyber-bullies. And they can make kids feel just as bad as Alex felt on the playground.
A couple of weesk after Big Mike got in trouble at recess he sends Alex an calling him names. Then he writes a nasty lie about Alex on a web site that a lot of kids at school can read. After school Big Mike sends Alex a text message every 10 minutes that says he’s going to beat Alex up the next day. Big Mike is really scaring Alex. As you can see Big Mike’s cyber-bullying is just as harmful as his bullying at recess. And, the worst part is that cyber-bullying can happen anywhere even when Alex thinks he’s safe at home. What should Alex do? The answer is simple. But, Alex has to be courageous again. He saves the nasty , the web site posting, and the text messages and shows them to his parents. His parents contact the school and give the principal all of the evidence of Big Mike’s cyber-bullying. Now Big Mike is even in bigger trouble.
Cyber-bullying is no fun.
If a cyber-bully targets you, be courageous like Alex and tell an adult, a parent, or teacher about it. It’s the best way to keep the Internet safe and fun.
