2 Internet Safety Use these Tips Don’t share your address, phone number, school name or your parents credit card number. Don’t meet someone you met online without your parent’s permission. Stay out of chat rooms unless your parents say it’s okay. Only open emails from people you know. Talk to a trusted adult if you read or see something online that makes you uncomfortable.

3 Cyber Bullying What is cyber bullying? When someone is cyber bullying he or she uses technology to harm someone else. Examples: Somebody is sending hurtful text messages. Somebody is spreading rumors using a cell phone or computer. Somebody is posting pictures or videos of somebody else on the Internet without that person’s consent.

4 Cyber Bullying Where does it happen? Most of the harassment takes place on social networking websites, such as Facebook, and video sharing websites, like YouTube. Instant messaging, text messaging, portable gaming devices, social gaming sites, interactive sites, such as Formspring and ChatRoulette.

5 Cyber Bullying How much cyber bullying happens? A 2010 study of 4,400 11 - 18 year old students, indicates that about 20% had been victims, about 20% had been cyber bullies, and 10% had been both at some point in their life.

6 Cyber Bullying What do you do if somebody cyber bullies you? Go to an adult you trust, a family member or teacher, and talk about your experience. Keep your evidence (email, text message) Make sure you share with your parents what you do online. Follow your parents’ technology rules.

7 Cyber Bullying What do you do so YOU don’t become a cyber bully. You should only say things online or on your phone that you would say with your teacher or mom and dad right beside you. Treat others with respect, anywhere, anytime.

8 Cyber Bullying How does cyber bullying make people feel? Cyber bullying makes people feel sad, angry, and frustrated. One teenager said: “It scares me and takes away all my confidence.” Some students are too afraid and embarrassed to go to school.

9 Cyber Bullying What can parents do? Express unconditional support. Work out with your child a mutually agreeable course of action. Schedule an appointment with your school. If physical threats are involved contact the police.
