War Affects Society Chapter 17.2

What disagreements emerged inside both the Union and Confederacy? A Divisive Time South- WV seceded from VA- joined the Union North- Copperheads- Lincoln’s opponents (Northern Democrats) who wanted peace with South Lincoln had protesters arrested Writ of Habeas Corpus- prevents the government from holding citizens without formal charges. Suspension of habeas corpus may happen when rebellion or invasion of public safety may require it.

Slave Undermine Confederacy Slow work, stop work, refuse to flee with masters. After the Emancipation Proclamation, slaves flee to the North Joined Union Army

Draft Laws Enthusiasm for war declines, conscription (draft) laws are enacted. Rich men of the South pay substitutes to replace them in the war efforts. Anger over the draft cause riots.

What economic and social changes were caused by war? North South African Americans now serving in the war Women taking jobs in factories and hospitals Poverty/hunger spread Poverty/hunger spread Food shortages At war and couldn’t harvest crops Transportation disrupted so food couldn’t reach the market Confederate and Union armies seized food Inflation (increase cost of good, decrease in value of money) 1861- $6.65 for food per month 1865- $68 for food per month

Economic and Social Change Income Tax- A tax on earnings Necessary to help pay for war Greenback- paper currency- helped economy while helping pay for the war

Women Aid in War Effort Ran farms and plantations Worked in offices and factories Clara Barton established the American Red Cross Women disguise themselves as men and go to war Harriet Tubman becomes spy for the Union Southern men begin to grow bitter. Why were they fighting the war for rich slave owners???
