1 Mrs. Enright 17-2 The Tide of War Turns

2  Disagreements over war:  Some southerners opposed slavery  West Virginia formed in 1863 and joined Union.  Copperheads favored peace with South  Writ of habeas corpus- prevents government. from holding citizens without formal charges.

3  Meanwhile the trouble, slaves…  Slowed/stopped their work  When Union armies came, stayed put to join army  Escaped plantations

4  Sides began passing laws of conscription.  Made men serve in the army.  South: planters with more than 20 slaves did not have to serve  CSA&Union: If you were rich, could pay people to replace you in army.  Draft very unpopular and caused riot.  4 days long.  Over 1000 killed or wounded.

5 The government passed 2 laws: Income tax- Tax on earnings Greenbacks- new paper currency used

6  With men away, women had to…  Plow fields  Ran farms plantations  Take over office and factory jobs  Thousands of women served as volunteer workers/nurses.  Gather supplies  Cook & clean  washing

7  Clara Barton- served on front lines as nurse.  Susie King Taylor- Afro-American woman who wrote about experiences.  “Many lives were lost,-not only men alone but noble women as well.”

8  Women disguised as men to enlist in army.  Jennie Hodgers- Illinois woman- Union- “Albert Cashier”

9  Main role of women in North and South  Harriet Tubman- Union spy  Belle Boyd- CSA spy  Boyd arrested 6 times but kept working
