2. Disagreement about War  Southerners begin to grow weary of the war and its demand.  The issue of states rights still plagued them.  Copperheads- northern democrats who wanted to make peace with the south.  Lincoln’s biggest opponents

3. Draft Laws  Conscription- draft law  Requires men to serve in the army  South started drafting in 1862  All able-bodied men ages 18- 45 had to serve in the army.  In the north the draft started in 1863, substitutes were allowed but you were paid a bounty of 300 dollars to volunteer

4. Economic Effects of War  Food shortages in markets for both sides  Inflation caused the price of food to be outrageous.  Average monthy food bill $6.65 in 1861, 1863 $68.  Income tax- tax on your earnings  Green backs- new currency named after the color

5. Resistance by Slaves  Slaves slowed their work or quit all together.  Some sabotaged or destroyed crops and equipment  Some sabotaged or destroyed crops and equipment.  Some rose up against the overseers  Many slaves after the emancipation proclamation fled to the north.

6. Women Aid War Effort  Women took over the jobs men would do, farm, run plantations, work in factories, and plow fields  Women became nurses for the soldiers, cooked them food, washed their clothes  Women were also spies.

7. Civil War Prison Camps  Prison camps were a place where many soldiers died from disease or starvation  Drinking water often came from creeks that were also used as sewers.  Elmira, New York- Union Prison  Andersonville, Georgia- Confederate Prison
