GILES ACADEMY EXAM RULES

BEFORE EXAM DAY Check your timetable thoroughly Seating plans will be displayed on the Year 11 and Exams Notice Board and you will also be given a copy with your statement of entry Check your timetable and report any concerns to Mrs Goodwin Information regarding non-examination assessments, controlled assessments, mobile phones, warning to candidates and privacy notice regarding personal data can be found on the Giles Academy’s website in the Info section or go to http://www.jcq.org.uk/exams-office/information-for-candidates It is advisable that you read this before your exams.

Follow these steps and you will not be in breach of the exam board and school rules Leave bags and coats in your locker All notes, books, papers and iPods must be removed from pockets before entering the exam room Make sure you are wearing your normal school uniform Check the seating plan – you need to know exactly when and where to go before each exam Enter the room quietly Listen carefully to and follow all instructions given

BEFORE THE START OF EVERY EXAM You must not have any unauthorised material or equipment in the exam room such as bags, calculator cases, coloured pencil cases or electronic devices including mobile telephones, MP3 players and iwatches. All notes, books, papers and iPods must be removed from pockets before entering the exam room. Once you enter the exam room, you may not talk or otherwise communicate with, or disturb other candidates. You are under exam conditions. If you require advice or assistance you must put up your hand. You are allowed to take into the exam room a drink of water in a clear plastic bottle with the label removed. No other food or drink is permitted. This includes chewing gum.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES Mobile phones, pagers, MP3 players, iwatches and all other electronic devices must be switched off and left in your bag or handed in to an invigilator. You may receive zero marks if you are discovered to have this equipment with you at your desk, or if it makes a noise during the exam.

BEHAVIOUR Students looking around, talking, smiling, disturbing other students ARE in breach of exam rules and run the risk of being disqualified

DURING THE EXAM Listen to the instructions and information being given by staff Check you have the right paper and the correct tier i.e. Foundation/Higher Read and re-read the questions Make sure you understand what information is needed Take your time Use all of the time allocated

Fire Alarm Exam Rules Should the fire alarm go off when you are taking an exam you should: Leave everything where it is and exit the exam room by the nearest exit. The invigilator will instruct you of your nearest exit and assembly point. You must not talk to or communicate with other candidates You follow the invigilator to the ‘zoned’ area on the field near the swimming pool You must not return to the exam room until you are told it is safe to do so You must return to your seat in silence and finish the exam You will be allowed the time taken for the evacuation at the end of the exam

Work your way through the exam paper If you cannot answer a question move on to the next one If there is time at the end go back and try to answer it If you have a problem, require more answer paper, or feel unwell, put up your hand. An invigilator will come to you You must not deface the exam paper or make any obscene or offensive markings You must not attempt to copy or assist anyone else Please be aware that the desk you sit at is your allocated desk for the duration of your exams and you will therefore be accountable for any damage that is done to the desk during your exam season

Any candidate failing to abide by these rules must be reported to the examination awarding body, who reserve the right to cancel your results in the current examination and in all other current and future examinations with all the awarding bodies. At the end of the examination you must remain in the exam conditions stated until all the papers have been collected and the invigilator has dismissed you. You must not take from the examination any stationery, either used or unused, rough work or any other materials provided for the examination. If any students persist in misbehaving during the exam a member of the SLT will be called to attend and potentially remove that student.

WHEN YOU FINISH YOUR EXAM PAPER Check your paper Read the questions again – this is where most mistakes are made Do not waste this time Make sure you remain in exam conditions You must remain seated until the end of the exam

AT THE END OF THE EXAM The invigilators will collect your answer and question papers You should remain seated and silent whilst this is done Leave the room quietly only when you are instructed to do so

FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE RULES Be prepared Have equipment with you Know where you are sitting Hand in mobile phones, iwatches and/or electronic devices, notes etc Enter the room quietly Listen to instructions Take the full time allocated for the exam When you are finished check your work Do not disturb others At the end of the exam leave the exam room in an orderly fashion

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Results day is Thursday 22nd August. Your results can be collected from school on the day, or Giles Academy will post them to you if you leave a large, stamped addressed envelope with the office. If you have allocated someone else to collect your results on your behalf, you are required to complete a consent form. Teachers will be in school on results day to help you with any queries that may arise. If a result is queried, the Head of Department, together with Mr Diaz, will investigate the feasibility of asking for a review of marking at the centre’s expense. Your consent is required before a review of marking is requested. You will be informed when your certificates are ready for collection from main reception. The Giles Academy will only keep hold of your certificates for 1 year after issue. We strongly recommend that you collect your certificates as soon as possible to save you a significant cost for replacements in the future.

And finally….. We hope that you will perform as well as you can in these exams. At all times, be considerate to each other and follow instructions carefully – the invigilators will try to make the process as painless as possible for you. GOOD LUCK!
