Dual Credit Nuts & Bolts

What Why How Who When Where

What is Dual Credit? CISD partnership with DCCCD Dual credit is a process through which a learner may earn both high school and college credit. DCCCD waives tuition for pre-approved courses CHS Course Guide NTH@C Course Guide Books and additional materials are the learners responsibility

Why Take Dual Credit? Many Benefits: Learners may potentially earn 3-60 hours of college credit for free Junior & Senior year students can enroll in 3 to 6 hours per semester Summer school can enroll in 3 to 12 hours CISD Learners have earned credit in over 7,800 + courses over the past 7 years Dual Credit courses are awarded (Honors) Level 3 GPA points Dual Credit Schedule can provide time & flexibility for learner Example- Learners who are on M/W schedule have open study time T/TH/FRI

How does it work? Learners take courses on pre-approved list in the Course Planning Guide NL Fall & Spring Terms- Classes are held on M/W or T/Th or online Learners may be given a period off for each course they are enrolled plus one travel period total. Max off campus time is 2 periods (example 1 & 5 or 4 & 8) Learners must be on CHS or NTH@C campus for 3 consecutive periods per day Other Options include Summer School

Tuition Waiver Tuition is waived for courses on Coppell ISD approved dual credit list Only Cost is Textbooks and Materials Tuition is not waived for: repeated courses courses that count for college credit only college courses, when the course has been taken for high school credit (AP, Regular HS Class)

Dual Credit Course Offerings Example CHS Course Guide Or NTH@C Course Guide Dual Credit Packet will be given by request

2019-2020 NTH@C SCHEDULE A Day B Day Time Period Hour Block Lunch 1 5 8:50-10:20 A Lunch 12:05-12:35 B Lunch 12:20-12:50 C Lunch 12:35-1:05 2 6 10:30-12:00 3 7 12:10-2:10 4 8 2:40-4:10 Juniors or Seniors taking 1 or 2 NL classes: AM Dual Credit learners could be off CHS or NTH@C campuses during periods 1 & 5 PM Dual Credit learners could be off CHS or NTH@C campuses during periods 4 & 8 All Juniors and Seniors must be on CHS or NTH@C campuses for at least 3 consecutive periods per school day. Freshmen and Sophomores must attend CHS or NTH@C for 8 periods Dual Credit Students can not be off during 2,3, 6 or 7. They must be on campus 3 consecutive periods.

Grades/Transcripts Students receive high school credit for a dual credit course if they earn a grade of A, B, or C. All dual credit courses taken for high school credit will be recorded on the high school transcript as a numerical grade and will be included in the GPA calculation as a (Honors) Level 3 course. Students should be aware that taking college classes concurrently while in high school results in the establishment of a collegiate academic record and students earn a college grade point average. Learners must submit an official NL transcript to any institution where admission is sought.

Are you ready for Dual Credit?

Who makes a good candidate for Dual Credit? Students who: are mature, organized and responsible. have good study habits. are motivated and self starters. do not need reminders regarding assignment and project deadlines. have their own transportation.

What are additional considerations? Late work almost never accepted by professors Syllabus expected to be followed without reminders Professors do not communicate with parents North Lake holiday schedule not always aligns with CISD holiday schedule Learner extracurricular activities and other absences not excused Accelerated 8 week and online courses need to be considered carefully Repercussions for failing grades include: Academic Probation Failed Course on permanent record May not be eligible for next semester courses

How do you qualify and enroll in Dual Credit?

How do Learners apply for DC? Apply to North Lake College online (NTH@C has step by step packet available from counselor) Check for Exemptions or take TSI Exemptions: SAT after March 5, 2016 (Minimum Score of 480 R/W and minimum score of 530 Math) ACT (Composite 23, Reading & Math 19) EOCs (English 2 Score of 4000; Algebra I Score of 4000) TSI Testing: Taken at North Lake College See packet for more information on dates and times
