O’Neill Subject Selection Information This PowerPoint provides step-by-step instructions designed to assist students, along with their parents/guardians, in completing the subject selection forms that will be used during the online subject selection process, which takes place February 25th – March 1st. Please do not hesitate to reference the O’Neill website or contact Student Services if more information is required.

Minimum of 24 Credits to Graduate A credit is earned when a class is passed. The 24 required credits consist of the following… Students should fill out this form before selecting their classes so they know what courses they need for graduation. IMPORTANT…These 24 classes are mandatory in order to graduate from O’Neill. However, additional classes may be needed to meet post-secondary requirements.

Graduation Checklists The Graduation Checklist form can be found on the O’Neill website at the following link… https://www.rcsd.ca/school/Archbishop/StudentServices/GraduationRequirements/Pages/default.aspx Transcripts, which list all of the classes/credits attained by students, were given out at the beginning of the year or can be obtained from the main office or Student Services IMPORTANT: Any students requiring assistance filling out this form can go to Student Services and speak with a counsellor.

Subject Request Sheet These subject selection forms have been distributed to all students and list every course offered at O’Neill next year. Students, along with their parents/guardians, will use this form to choose their core classes, as well as their electives. The following slides will outline the steps of the subject selection process

Step 1 Select 6 Core Classes Courses that have a number ending in a ‘1’ (such as 11, 21, 31) are modified courses and should not be selected unless the student is in modified programming. There are 4 mandatory classes for Grade 12 students in the French Immersion Program. ELA A30 (or ELA A30 AP or ELA A31) and/or ELA B30 (or ELA B30AP or ELA B31) 2) Français 30 3) Sciences sociales 30 4) Éd chrétienne 30 If both ELA 30 courses are chosen, one is used as an elective Both ELA A30 AP and ELA B30 AP must be taken for AP pathway. Sciences sociales 30 MUST be taken in addition to the 20 or 30 level Social Science course listed for grade 11. Therefore, students will need at least 2 Social Science credits in total in order to graduate. Grade 12 students ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to select 10 classes (It is easier to drop classes than add) NOT including Band, Instrumental Jazz, Choral and Vocal Jazz

Select Elective Subjects Step 2 Select Elective Subjects Grade 12 students in the French Immersion Program will select 6 elective classes - not including Band, Instrumental Jazz, Choral and Vocal Jazz. Remember… if you have already taken some of the mandatory classes in grades 10 or 11, more elective classes will need to be selected in order to have 10 classes in total. You must check the Course Booklet found on the ‘Student Services’ page of the O’Neill Website under the ‘Program of Studies’ tab to make sure any pre-requisites have already been taken and passed, or are also selected as a class for next year. (see next slide) IMPORTANT… By the end of grade 12, students must have five 30 level classes in total in order to graduate. ***At least ONE physical education class needs to be taken in order to graduate. It can be taken in Grade 10 11 or 12 and can be either Wellness 10, Phys Ed 20 or 30.

All course related information can be found under the ‘Program of Studies’ tab of the ‘Student Services’ section on the O’Neill website… https://www.rcsd.ca/school/Archbishop/StudentServices/Pages/default.aspx Course summaries and pre-requisite information is listed in the booklet IMPORTANT: For each of the courses that you wish to take in the upcoming year, TRIPLE CHECK that you have already taken and passed, or have also selected the pre-requisite courses that are listed in the Grade 10-12 Course Booklet.

Class Changes We are projected to be over 850 students next year! This means that classes will be full. Choose classes carefully! We create classes based on what is chosen during subject selection. Reasons for class changes… pre-requisite issue to meet grad requirement/post-secondary requirement (Keep in mind that these changes can only be made if there is room in a class. It’s your responsibility to keep track of your credits and know the pre-requisites for the classes you select. If you aren’t sure/need help, ask! Class changes will not be made… X to switch spares X because you changed your mind X to switch teachers X because you want to be with your friend

Online Selection & Verification Feb 25th – March 1st: Online Selection Process Important that parents/guardians and students complete together. Please be aware that specific electives may not be timetabled if there is not a sufficient number of requests - students will be notified and may need to select other options if this occurs. March 5th: Verifications Sent Home To be reviewed and signed by both parent/guardian and student and returned to the office by March 8th .

Math Pathways

Workplace and Apprenticeship Math Pathways Workplace and Apprenticeship Content in this pathway meets the needs of students intending to pursue post-secondary education in many of the programs at Saskpolytechnic, or non-math oriented faculties at university.

Math Pathways Foundations Content in this pathway meets the needs of students intending to pursue careers in areas that typically require university, but are not math intensive.

Pre-Calculus and Calculus Math Pathways Pre-Calculus and Calculus Math Foundations 20** Content in this pathway meets the needs of students interested in pursuing careers in science-related or math-related areas of study in university. **It is strongly recommended that all students take Math Foundations 20 before Pre-Calculus 20

Environmental Science 20 If you want to take all of your sciences, this is the recommended pathway. Semester Grade 10 Grade 11 Grade 12   One Science 10 Biology 30 Chemistry 30 Two Health Science 20 or Environmental Science 20 or both Physical Science 20 Physics 30

Advance Placement Programs Students can challenge themselves academically. Provides opportunities for higher level thinking and more in-depth application of knowledge and skills. Students can opt in or out of the Pre-AP courses. Scoring a 4 or 5 on an AP exam will help students gain university credit (save time and money) If a student is interested in an AP program, they are advised to speak with a guidance counsellor or one of the AP teachers in order to discuss the appropriate pathway.

AP Computer Science Pathway Computer Science Online Prep Course) Semester One Two Grade 11 or Grade 12 Computer Science 20 Computer Science 30AP (Computer Science 30 and Computer Science Online Prep Course) (Exam in May) The Computer Science 30AP prep course is offered online in Semester 2. The prep course can be taken concurrently with Computer Science 30 or separately (if Computer Science 30 was taken in grade 11 or semester one of grade 12).

AP Psychology Pathway Semester One Two Grade 11 or Grade 12 Psychology 20AD Psychology 30AP (Exam in May) Taken in the same year, whether grade 11 or 12 - a double credit on selection sheet

Learning Online Online learning courses are available. However, students still need to register for 10 in-class courses as registration in Learning Online classes is not guaranteed. Please see a guidance counsellor if you would like to register for any of the listed (see next slide) online classes next year.
