2 The Course Selection Process  Step 1: –Share course selection information with your parents –See all of your most recent teachers in each discipline to obtain their level recommendation and signature

3 The Course Selection Process  Step 2: –The shaded area should include all courses you have been recommended for. Please include the course # –If any course you wish to be included in your schedule differs from the teacher recommendation, a waiver form must be completed

4 The Course Selection Process  Step 3: –Once all teacher recommendations have been initialed, obtain your parent’s signature at the top of the form. Teacher’s will not sign off on forms that were already signed by a parent so this must be the last step  Step 4: –Return completed selection sheet to guidance by Wednesday, March 30th If you do not return your selection sheet by the deadline, courses may be assigned for you

5 Tips  Include your parents in the decision-making process  Meet with your guidance counselor this week – sign up sheets are on the round table in guidance  Do not wait until the last minute to see your teachers  Choose carefully, it will not always be possible to make a change later

6 175 Credits for Graduation Additionally, students need to pass:  Passing grade in the grade level English each year and accrue 35 credits –This requires you to take an elective either junior or senior year if you are not enrolled in AP English 11 or 12  5 courses in math, including Algebra II (25 credits)  5 courses in science (25 credits)  5 courses in social studies, including World History, and US History I/II (25 credits)  All juniors must take one-quarter of Physical Education  3 courses in fine arts (15 credits)  3 courses in foreign language (15 credits)

7 Weighted Courses  Students are required to have a minimum of 6 academic majors. Juniors are strongly encouraged to carry 7 academic courses.  Academic majors are courses that are leveled (College Prep, Honors or AP)  AP classes count for 2 courses

8 Advanced Placement Program  Cohasset High School offers AP courses  You need a teacher recommendation to take an AP Course  Pick and choose these courses carefully, they meet 4 days a week, all year!  Students in this program are required to take the Advanced Placement National Exam in May  These courses may allow you to earn college credit or placement

9 English There will be three levels in English next year; College Prep, Honors and Advanced Placement College Prep and Honors English 11 will be semester courses Non AP English students will be required to take an additional semester English elective course during their junior or senior year Creative Writing and Literature Through the Media are the available options

10 Social Studies  All students must take United States History; it is a graduation requirement  Students in all levels will have US History for both semesters  Additional Social Studies courses are available. Review your course listing form for the options available to juniors

11 Math  College Prep Sequence for courses, these are all semester courses: Geometry CP - Algebra II CP – Trigonometry CP – Pre-Calculus CP – Differential Calculus CP Pre-Calculus CP – Differential Calculus CP  Honors Sequence for courses, these are semester courses: Geometry H - Algebra II H – Trigonometry H - Pre-Calculus H – Differential Calculus H Pre-Calculus H – Differential Calculus H

12 Math Other Math Courses include:  Statistics CP, H, AP  Computer Science CP  Principles of Finance CP

13 Science & Engineering The following options are available:  Biology CP or H  Chemistry H  Chemistry In The Community CP  Marine Science CP or H  Environmental Science CP or H  Physics H  Anatomy & Physiology CP or H  Ecology  AP Biology  AP Chemistry  Engineering the Future  Furniture Design (non-weighted)

14 Foreign Language  All students must pass three courses of a foreign language for graduation  Remember, selective colleges want to see 3 or more courses of the same language on a transcript

15 Wellness Education  All juniors are required to take one-quarter of Physical Education  You may elect to take additional quarters of Physical Education but credit will only be awarded to one-quarter of PE per year

16 Fine Arts and other Elective Courses  Please refer to the Preliminary Course Selection Sheet for options  Are you interested in taking a course online? Courses are offered at the AP, Honors or College Prep levels. An announcement will be made in early May with registration details
