Cells Organelles 9-17 Page 43

9. Mitochondria Found in all eukaryotes. Energy producing organelle. Converts oxygen (O2) and glucose (C6H12O6) into ATP

10. Ribosomes Found in all cells. Synthesize proteins.

11. Microtubules Small tubes that make up the cytoskeleton-supports cell and provides shape. Aids movement of materials in and out of cells.

12. Cilia Small, hair-like projections surrounding the cell. Used to move the cell.

13. Flagella Whip-like tail used to move the cell.

14. Vacuole Found in all eukaryotes. Very large in plant cells- CENTRAL VACUOLE Small organelles in animal cells. Storage area for water and nutrients.

15. Chloroplast Found only in plant cells. Site of photosynthesis. Contains the pigment chlorophyll. Appears green

16.Cell Wall Plant cell walls are composed of cellulose-a starch. Bacterial cell walls are composed of peptidoglycan. Adds structure and support to the cell. ANIMAL CELLS DO NOT CONTAIN A CELL WALL!

17. Centrioles - Paired cylindrical organelles near nucleus - Composed of microtubules - Involved in cellular division ***ONLY FOUND IN ANIMAL CELLS
