There are three main parts of the cell theory – the theory states:
All living things are made of cells
Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things
All cells are produced from existing cells

3. Plant vs. Animal
PLANT -square shape -cell wall -central vacuole -chloroplast -photosynthesis
ANIMAL -Rounder shape -centrioles -must eat, can’t make energy from light

4. Cell Wall (only in plants)
Function: supports and protects the cell
Also involved in cell communication

5. Central Vacuole (only in plants)
Function: Stores water and minerals and other nutrients

6. Chloroplast (only in plants)
Function: Photosynthesis
Makes sugar and oxygen from sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide

7. Cell Membrane Function: To control what enters and leaves the cell.
Aids in protection against pathogens

8. Cytoplasm
Function: Gel substance that supports the contents of the cell
Chemical reactions take place here

9. “Mighty” Mitochondria
Function: Cellular Respiration
The power house of the cell that converts sugar from plants into ATP.
ATP is the fuel for your cells and gives you ENERGY!!!

10. Nucleus
Function: Stores hereditary information (DNA) and controls the cell by protein synthesis

11. Chromatin
Function: Controls the cell and contains instructions for making proteins

12. Lysosome
Function: Breaks down food, materials, waste, old cell parts, and toxins in the cell.
It is filled with enzymes (enzymes speed up reactions)

13. Nucleolus
Function: Makes Ribosomes

14. Ribosomes
Function: Makes proteins

15. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Function: Makes proteins and transports substances through the cell

16. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Function: Manufactures hormones
Transports materials
Detoxifies the liver of organic compounds
Adds calcium when needed

17. Vesicle
Function: Stores materials in the cell

Function: Breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen

Function: Aids in cell division

Function: Protein fiber that help the cell contract and move

24. Microtubules Function: Make up the cytoskeleton of the cell.
Support the cell under the membrane and keeps the organelles in place.

25. Flagella
Function: Long whip like tail that is used for movement

26. Cilia
Function: Short hair like organelle that allows some cells to move
