1 Structure and Function
Animal and Plant Cell Organelles Structure and Function

2 Common to Both Animal and Plant Cells
Nucleus Cell Membrane Mitochondria Cytoplasm Golgi Apparatus Ribosome Vacuoles Endoplasmic Reticulum Nucleolus Nuclear membrane

3 Only Found in the Animal Cell
Lysosome Cilia Centriole Flagella

4 Only found in the Plant Cell
Chloroplast Cell Wall Central Vacuole

5 Nucleus Nucleolus Nuclear Membrane Produces Ribosomes
Control center of the cell. Contains chromosomes which are composed of DNA ; functions in the genetic control of the cell. Nucleolus Produces Ribosomes Nuclear Membrane Thin flexible barrier that regulates passage of materials between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Lipid bi-layer with embedded proteins.

6 Mitochondria The energy source of the cell. Converts glucose to ATP energy through the process of Cellular respiration

7 Golgi Apparatus Collects, packages, modifies and distributes molecules for transport within or out of the cell.

8 Endoplasmic Reticulum
A complex extensive network that transports materials throughout the inside of the cell. Highway transport system of the cell

9 Cell Membrane Thin flexible barrier that surrounds the cell.
Selectively permeable: regulates what enters and leaves the cell. Composed of a phospholipids by-layer with embedded proteins.

10 Cytoplasm Semi-fluid material inside the cell containing molecules and the organelles; exclusive of the nucleus; is bound by the cell membrane

11 Ribosome Produces proteins by the process of Protein Synthesis
Composed of a Large Subunit and a Small subunit Found Free in the cell (cytoplasm) and on the Rough endoplasmic reticulum

12 Store materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates; vacuoles in the animal cell (if presents) are much smaller than those in the plant cell.

13 Organelles found only in the Plant Cell
Central Vacuole: Stores food and water Chloroplast: Converts solar energy into chemical energy through the process of Photosynthesis Contains a green pigment called Chlorophyll. Cell Wall: Protects the cell Made of cellulose Rigid Found in bacteria, Fungi, and some Protists.

14 Organelles found only in the Animal Cell
Cilia: Tiny hairs used for movement or filtering tiny particles Found in animal or protist. Flagella: Whip-like tail used for movement Lysosome: contains enzymes necessary for digesting materials in the cell. Cleaning crew of the cell Centriole: controls cell reproduction
