During the early 1900s, how did cities change? Cities grew upward & outward---bigger buildings, more area (b/c of rise in population) and more modern technologies, e.g. elevated trains, trolleys, cable cars

Who was William Marcy Tweed & why is he historically important? He was “Boss” Tweed of New York’s Tammany Hall—a powerful N.Y. political machine

Why did people move from rural areas to urban areas? Jobs! Many crops died out, industry jobs paid more, and factory work was easier to find

The nativists had what as their main objective? The nativists were anti-immigration and favored native born Americans over immigrants in positions of wealth & power

The gospel movement sought to improve immigrants’ and society’s lives through the application of the gospel (Jesus’s teachings) The settlement movement was the way in which young, educated men & women put the gospel into action
