Usage of the Present Subjunctive
Presentation transcript:

Quasimodo: Look at the D of WEIRDO. There are a lot of different phrases and verbs that indicate doubt, denial, & disbelief. These are indicators of the subjunctive. On the other hand, when expressing certainty you DON’T use the subjunctive, you use the indicative. Come up with some verbs and phrases that express certainty and need the indicative.

Expressions of certainty: creer que … = to believe that ... no dudar que ... = to not doubt that ... es cierto que ... = it is certain that ... es claro que ... = it is clear that ... es evidente que ... = it is certain/evident that ... es obvio que ... = it is obvious that ... estar seguro que ... = to be sure that ... es verdad que ... = it is true that ... no es dudoso que ... = it is not doubtful that ... no hay duda de que ... = there is no doubt that ... Es seguro que… = it’s true, it’s certain

Subjunctive or Indicative?

Práctica: I think that he is crazy. (Yo) pienso que él es loco. They don’t believe he tells the truth. Ellos no creen que él diga la verdad. It’s important that we go to the butcher’s shop. Es importante que (nosotros) vayamos a la carnicería. It’s obvious that they are boyfriend and girlfriend. Es obvio que ellos son novios.
