Welcome to battle high school! Basic introduction of self and task for the day.

Vocabulary for Enrollment Block: Meets every other day Semester: Meets either 1st or 2nd semester Year long: Meets entire year Advisory: Class that is required for all 9th grade students. It includes orientation activities and study time.

Basic Information All freshmen in CPS take four core classes, a semester of health and PE , a mandatory advisory class, and three other classes. Core classes are: Physics 1, English 9, Math, and Government Advisory is not for credit Your other courses should be selected with graduation credits in mind Freshmen will earn 7 credits in the year. The selections you make now are final. Please choose wisely. Your course request form is due Friday, February 6. Plan to attend the Course Fair at Battle High School Tuesday, February 3, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Battle Commons. We are going to walk through the process of requesting courses using the white form labeled “DRAFT”. When you are sure of your choices, you will transfer them to the official course request form and return it to your Government teacher.

Honors vs. Advanced Placement An honors class will move more quickly than a regular college preparatory class Students will be expected to take their studies a little deeper than in a regular core class Advanced Placement courses are college level classes taught at the high school level Students will learn college information in a supportive high school environment Higher level thinking skills will be taught to prepare students for college coursework

Other courses Graduation requirements, Career Paths When selecting the remainder of your courses it is important to have an eye on your options for when you graduate high school. In the front of the Planning Guide there is a wealth of information on the various career paths as well as connections to the courses offered at Hickman (and the Career Center).

Graduation Requirements* Students must have 24 credits in specific areas to graduate. English (EN): 3 Language Arts (LA): 1 Social Studies: 3 Government (GV): 1, World History (WH): 1, US History (US): 1 Math (MA): 3 Science: 3 Biology (BS): 1, Physical (PS): 1, Elective(BS or PS): 1 Health (HE): 0.5 Fine Art (FA): 1 Practical Art: 1 Personal Finance (PF): 0.5, Practical Art (PA): 0.5 Physical Education: 1 Electives: 7.5 Earned when other areas are complete or when code is EL *Please note, these are basic requirements and may not reflect admission requirements to post-secondary training/education. Students must research options to select coursework that will fulfill any additional requirements.

Courses Often Selected for 9th grade Physical Education Fine Art World Language (some colleges require or recommend two levels of the same language for admission) Practical Art PE: As there are in academic core classes, there are levels of PE at Hickman. Fitness Walking is the most basic course. Students who are already athletic or are looking for a challenge might consider Strength Training or Body Sculpting. Fine Art: Music, Acting, Humanities, Foundations of Art (mention the difference between Art Basics and Art 1) World Language: French, German, Japanese, Latin, Spanish Practical Arts: Difference between Creative Cuisine and Culinary Arts; Keyboarding, etc.

Alternative Choices

Alternative Choices Students, at times, do not receive their first choice in classes and we need to have a second choice to complete your schedule. It is important that you include alternative choices that are similar to your first choice(s) If you are requesting semester classes make sure you have at least two semester alternatives. You will also need an alternate for year long choices If you do not select alternative choices, we may choose for you if there is a conflict It is not necessary to select alternative choices for core classes
