We’re all human. Sometimes we mess up. Sometimes we have bad days. Sometimes we need extra practice or a re-do. I get it! I need a re-do sometimes (okay, a lot of times) and that’s okay. We’re all in it together. Let’s raise each other up, support each other, and understand that life is messy. All we need is a positive attitude and a willingness to try. Homework will be posted on the class board, sent via remind.com, and viewable on Instagram. What is the power of words? Can I bring my own technology? An e-reader is always welcome in class (with parental permission; you are responsible for your technology if it is lost/broken) as long as you are using it to access reading materials. There are days when you may find it convenient to bring a personal device to class (laptop, tablet, smartphone) but it is never necessary. Will I Need Technology at home? YES! You will be completing assignments via Google Classroom/Google Drive for my class and other 8th grade classes. I do not require a printer; if documents or pictures need to be printed, they can be printed in my classroom. What if I’m absent? If you are absent for any reason, it is your responsibility to set up a conference with me the day you return to class. Each class period is action packed, so we will not have time to discuss what you missed during our LA period. You will need to arrange an alternate time to meet with me or ask a friend in addition to visiting your assigned Google Classroom page. You are 100% responsible for taking ownership and making up missing work. Refer to the handbook for the school policy in handing in assignments when absent. What if I need help? I became a teacher to help you! My job is to help you learn. One of my main goals is to prepare you for high school. An important skill to develop this year is self-advocacy. In other words, identify what you need help with and ask! Do not wait for me to notice that you are struggling. You can ask before, during, or after class. You can also write me a note, send me an email, or message me. PARENTS: feel free to email me anytime, but please encourage your child to work on developing their self-advocacy skills. What is the power of words? I am looking forward to a fantastic school year with you! We will read a lot, write a lot, talk a lot, collaborate a lot, and laugh often during our time spent together. You will leave 8th grade ready for high school and will hopefully have a deeper appreciation for the power of words. My goal for this year is that you learn new things, become a better reader and writer, share your ideas, become part of our community, work to make the world a better place, and have fun while in room 402.
