What is propaganda and Who Uses it? Generally, it is an appeal to emotion, not intellect It is an attempt to change your behavior It attempts to “guide your choice”’ Who uses it? Military Media Advertisers Politicians

Propaganda techniques Bandwagon Testimonial Loaded Words Name Calling Plain Folks Glittering Generalization Snob Appeal Transfer Red Herring

Bandwagon Everyone is doing it

testimonial Quotations or endorsements which connect a famous or respectable person with a product or item

Snob appeal Aims to flatter Suggests that this product/idea is better than others or “ahead of the times”

Plain folks Makes leaders or product look like “regular” people (“mom and pop style”) Opposite of Snob Appeal

Name calling Links a person, idea, or product to a negative symbol

transfer Using images to bring up strong feelings or emotions in order to persuade

Loaded words Uses “loaded” words – emotionally charged words, like “new” or “improved” or “best”

Glittering (or sweeping) generalizations Makes an oversimplified statement about a group or product based on limited information
