Effective Communication Skills Do it Right…or Suffer the Consequences

Skill #1 - Eye Contact This tells the speaker you are listening. What it looks like: Look at the speakers eyes (even if it’s uncomfortable) No fidgeting

Skill #2 - Active Listening Focus on the speaker Avoid interrupting What it Looks Like Maintain eye contact Smile Only the speaker is talking

Skill #3 - Feedback/Responses/Summarize This is when the listener speaks Comments need to be free of judgement. What it Looks Like: Eye contact Summarize (shorten) what you heard for clarification Answer question or give opinion without bias

Types of Communication

Types of Communication - Passive This type does NOT express needs or feelings. Get taken advantage of, or treated unfairly. Traits Poor eye contact Soft spoken Allows others to make decisions ALWAYS

Types of Communication - Aggressive This type disrespects the rights/feelings of others. Will take advantage of others. Traits Criticizes and humiliates Interrupts others Fails to listen
