I-Message – A statement that contains.

The effect the behavior has on the individual.
The feeling that resulted.
You-Message – A statement that blames or shames another person instead of expressing feelings.

Type of listening in which a person lets others know what they said was heard and understood.

Clarifying response – Listener asks for more information.
Restating response – Listener repeats what was said in their own words.
Summarizing response – Listener reviews major ideas expressed.
Confirming response – Listener acknowledges the feelings expressed by the speaker and to show appreciation for the expression of those feelings.
