Parts of Speech

Noun A person, place, thing, or idea Person: Place: Thing: Idea: Mr. Hostetler Merrillville dog freedom student store pencil love teacher mall desk sadness

pronoun A word that takes the place of a noun in a sentence Pronouns help avoid redundancy Mr. Hostetler explained to Mr. Hostetler’s class that Mr. Hostetler’s students needed to know the parts of speech so they could pass Mr. Hostetler’s final.

Verb A word that expresses an action, condition, or state of being.

adjective A word that describes or modifies a noun. Answers the questions: Which one? How many? What Kind? How much?

adverb Word that modifies or describes a verb, adjective or adverb. Answers: How? When? To What Extent? Where?

conjunction A word that joins together two words or sentences.

interjection A word that expresses a sudden emotion. WOW!

Preposition A word that expresses relationship between other words in the sentence. These words are always followed by nouns or pronouns that are called “objects”. The phrase formed with prepositions can act like an adjective or an adverb.
