2 Introduction Parts of speech are the basic types of words that English has. The parts of speech are: noun, verb, pronoun, adverb, adjective, preposition, conjunction, interjection, and articles.

3 Nouns A noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing. Example: man, city, car Identify the noun in the following sentence. The boy is reading. Answer: boy

4 Verb A verb is a word that shows action or a state of being.
Example: run, jump, walk Which verb completes the sentence? Susie likes to _______ rope. Answer: Susie likes to jump rope.

5 Pronoun A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun or another pronoun. Examples: she, he, I Which pronoun listed above can take the place of Susie in the following sentence? Susie likes to jump. Answer: She likes to jump rope.

6 Adverb An adverb is a word that describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs answer How, When, Where. Examples: quickly, slowly, high Choose an adverb for the following sentence. A rabbit jumps ____ . Answer: A rabbit jumps high.

7 Adjective An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. Adjectives answer what kind, which one, how many, or how much. Examples: four, big, tall Which adjective completes the sentence? My dog has ____ balloons. Answer: My dog has five balloons.

8 Preposition A preposition is a word used to show connection between a noun or pronoun and some other word in a sentence. Examples: in, over, on, Complete the following sentence with a preposition. The cow jumped ____ the moon. Answer: The cow jumped over the moon.

9 Conjunction A Conjunction is a word used to join words or groups of words. Examples: and, or, but Complete the following sentence with the correct conjunction. Bobby _____ Susie played on the see-saw at school. Bobby and Susie played on the on the see-saw at school.

10 Interjection An Interjection is a word or short phrase used to express strong feeling or emotion. Examples: Wow, Ouch, Boo Choose an interjection to complete the following sentence. _____! said the ghost. Answer: Boo! Said the ghost.

11 Article An Article is used to introduce a noun. Example: the a, an
Choose the article to complete the following sentence. The boy and girl played on ___ see-saw. Answer: The boy and girl played on the see-saw.
