Centring on Your Learning An introduction to York College Learning Centre The Learning Centre plays an important role in your learning. In order to make the best use of its resources you need to ensure that you find out everything there is to know about it!

Why visit the Learning Centre? Activate your ID card to use the printers See the wide range of resources available Get to know the subject specialists linked to your area of study You should have received your network log in details before the start of your course. If you have not been given a username and password you can take your ID card to one of the Learning Centre helpdesk and ask the staff to activate your account. To enable you to print and photocopy, you must also register your card at one of the MFPs or Multi Function Printers. These are located in the hubs as well as the Learning Centre. You can use any of these MFPs to print, photocopy, or scan to email. The Learning Centre has lots of useful resources in print form, including main course textbooks you can use in your studies. It also has access to many more on-line resources. The LC team is there to help you with finding and using resources, and each curriculum has a dedicated person with excellent knowledge of subject resources.

Where is the Learning Centre? In the Central Core next to the atrium On 3 floors Across the Bridge The Learning Centre is a highly visible, centrally located, study space. It can be accessed directly across the bridge on 3 floors during term time. When you cross the bridge into the Learning Centre, please respect the needs of others for quiet study

Any time When can I go? Free time between lessons Class time with tutor-booked lesson Evenings Holidays Any time Learning Centre opening times Term time 8.30am - 7.45pm Monday to Thursday, 8.30am - 5.00pm on Friday During the holidays 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday All computers shut down 10 minutes before closing Please note that during the holidays, also during term time before 8.45am, and after 5pm (4.30 on Fridays) access to the Learning Centre is only available via the bridge on floor 1. Floors 2 and 3 can be accessed via the internal lift

How do I use the Learning Centre? Observe the code of conduct: Respect other students and staff No eating. No drinking near the computers Bottled water only at study tables Keep mobile phones on silent mode Use earphones to listen to music Use computers for coursework only Use the Centre quietly, for work only With Respect The Learning Centre has very few rules, which are there to maintain an environment conducive to study. Please observe these requests, to ensure you and your fellow students have a pleasant and productive experience

How do I use the Learning Centre? Attend an Induction to learn more Pick up or print a leaflet Watch a video tutorial Ask the staff for help Use the maps and guiding signs Search the OPAC library catalogue for resources All students are offered a Learning Centre induction to introduce them to the staff who can help, and to see where their subject resources are located. There are also lots of leaflets, maps and guiding signs for more detailed assistance. These can also be accessed on-line on the Learning Centre on Blackboard via the Intranet home page. You need to use the OPAC library catalogue to locate resources in the Centre. You will be shown this as part of your induction. You can also access the OPAC from any device with an Internet connection, wherever you are.

What’s in the Learning Centre? Lots of different types of resources: Individual and group study spaces Books including access to e-books Journals or magazines DVDs Computers Multi Function Printers The Learning Centre has lots of study tables, some with individual booths, others for group study The library stock includes books, journals and DVDs . E-books and journals on-line are also a valuable resource Most of the computers are on floor 1, with smaller numbers on floors 2 and 3. All are open access. There is a block of computers on floor 1 that can be used for accompanied study, where students can work with support using one computer Each floor has a Multi Function Printer, with printing, photocopying and scanning capabilities.

Next Steps? Tutor books an induction with your Learning Centre subject specialist to See your subject resources Be shown how to use the OPAC library catalogue Return to the Induction page At your induction you will be introduced to your subject specialist, be shown where all relevant resources are and given a demonstration on how to do a basic search, identify an item, and then go to the shelf to find it. You can go, in your own time, to one of the MFPs anywhere in college, to scan your card on the front of the MFP and log in to activate your printing account. This also activates your cashless account after 15 minutes. You must scan your card first before logging in to create the link. You can then use the Cashless Portal on the college web page to credit your account. You can also use the credit loader on floor 1 of the Learning Centre to add money to your printing account only.
