1 Introduction to the Library
For New Students Welcome the class, introduce yourself, then the workshop: to introduce new students to what the library has to offer! Please let students know that they can interrupt at any time during the workshop if they have a question (I usually go further by saying: if you have a question, at least one other student in class has the same question – so you are helping out by asking your question)

2 Library Facilities & Resources
Study carrels Group study rooms Computers, printers Photocopiers Typewriters Microform reader Tutorials & Guides Library Workshops Library 191 class Reference Help provided by a librarian! This is what the library has to offer students. Go through each bullet point: We have study carrels where you can study Group study rooms are available for up to 3 hours at a time if you are studying as a group (no advance reservation required). There are 10 rooms on the main floor (for smaller groups 2-4) and 2 bigger study rooms on the upper level (for larger groups 5-8) We have computers with internet access and printers ( and word processing is limited to the computers on the upper level) Photocopiers are available in the room across from the Circulation desk Typewriters are available in the room next to the Copiers Microform reader (mention we have it in the typing room, but don’t bother going into detail on what it is – unless someone asks) Tutorials & Guides - across from the Reference Desk, we have some print handouts, but these are also available online and I’ll show you where to find them on our homepage toward the end of this workshop We offer a series of nine library workshops that teach you research skills. Each workshop is 1 hour long, and I’ll show you how where to find more information and where to sign up for workshops later on today We also offer a 2 unit credit course that is transferrable to CSU and UC. I’ll show you where to find more information on this as well Most importantly, we have a librarian available at the reference desk whose primary job is to help you.

3 Information Resources
PRINT/PHYSICAL Books Reference books Articles Journals Magazines Newspapers CDs Audio cassettes ---- ELECTRONIC E-books E-Ref books Article databases Journals Magazines Newspapers ---- World Wide Web Information Resources available to students, presented here in print vs. electronic form. Print means that you can physically touch these items; Electronic means that it is only accessible from a computer. Note that for books, reference books and articles, we have both in print and electronic; we don’t have electronic access to CDs and cassettes, and that WWW is not available in print (which means that web sites don’t go through the same publication review process as print resources do, so you have to be more critical about which websites are good for academic purposes)

4 Library Hours FALL/SPRING: Mon-Thu 8am-9pm; Fri 10am-2pm; Sat 10am-2pm
Closed Sun and school holidays WINTER/SUMMER: Mon-Thu 8am-8pm; Closed Fri-Sun and school holidays Remote access 24/7 from anywhere with internet connection (username and password required) Library hours, but access to electronic resources that I will show you here is available remotely from anywhere with internet connection.
