3 Opening Hours / Your uniCARD ►The Library is open 24/6 during exam periods ►The Help desk is open 09:00 - 18:00, Monday to Friday ►Go to: www.aston.ac.uk/library/openinghourswww.aston.ac.uk/library/openinghours ►Your uniCARD is your Library Card. You will need it at all times to: ►Gain entry to the Library ►Borrow books ►Borrow and return a laptop ►Collect your printing / photocopies

4 Studying in UK academic libraries ►In a UK library the emphasis is on independent learning ►You are expected to search for books yourself using the and then find them on the shelves and take them out using a Self Service machine ►Books are available to loan for a set period of time and returning the books on time is very important ►Books can be borrowed for free – there is no charge

5 Printing and Scanning Printers and scanners in the Library ►Print from Library Computers to anywhere in the University ►Printers on each floor of the Library ►2 colour printers – 1 on Ground Floor and 1 on 2nd Floor (currently unavailable due to refurbishment work) ►You can credit your printing account online by using a debit or credit card. Debit cards must be from a UK bank account. ►To put credit on you account log on to a university PC and click on the icon ►Demonstrations of how to credit your account and use the printing system during your session ►Library staff are always available to help – please just ask

6 Self service facilities ►Borrow, return and renew books, pay Library fines. Self-Service Laptops ►Available to borrow from the Ground Floor ►Wireless Internet Computers ►There are over 150 computers (first come, first served) ►Login with your Aston University username and password. ►Borrow our Self-Service laptops to use in the Library (available from a machine on the Ground Floor)

7 Using information for study in the UK ►Copyright Law is very important and you must adhere throughout your time in the UK ►You are permitted to print or photocopy one chapter or 5% of a book or one article per issue of a journal ►If you are unsure as to what you are permitted to do please ask a member of Library staff

8 Studying in the Library A range of study spaces Ground Floor – a social study space with whiteboards. You can eat and drink on Ground Floor but please keep drinks sealed and no hot food to be brought into the Library ►Ground Floor and 1st Floor – group study space, rooms for practising presentations and an assistive technology room (DANU) ►2nd Floor – group study most of the year ►3rd Floor – single silent study You can use your phone on the Ground Floor and stairwells. Please do not disturb others by using mobile phones on the upper floors. Please note: 2 nd and 3 rd floors closed until the end of October

9 Finding books in the Library ►Search for books using: ►Library SmartSearch on the web site or ►Library Catalogue terminals in the Library ►Make a note of the class number and the location (currently Ground Floor or First Floor) ►Go to the floor and check the posters on the end of the shelves to find the book ►Get the book off the shelf and issue it, using a self service machine on the Ground Floor. ►Come along to your during Fresher’s Week or Week 1 to find out how to search for books

11 Accessing Library resources in your native language ►Most of our major databases and journal collections can be searched in a number of languages ► can be searched in 29 languages ►Most of our databases provide research material from across the world (global coverage) ►The majority of our journal subscriptions are in English although we do have some in French, German and Spanish for the languages students
