Starter: Complete the 2 spider diagrams on the following slides. One should show all the phone features Ruby might use for school work, and the other should include all the phone features Ruby might use in her social life. Some features might appear on both diagrams.

Lesson Objectives: By the end of this lesson you will be able to: distinguish between mobile phone features with social purposes and those with work-related purposes understand that using different applications on a mobile phone affects the energy consumption and battery life explain GPS

Discussion: Should mobile phones be allowed in schools? If they were allowed, what features would be of use? Why do you think they are not allowed in most schools? Which features would teachers not want pupils using?

Mobile phone batteries Ruby finds that her mobile phone battery is lasting longer for some activities than others. Rank these activities in order of energy consumption from those that use the most energy to those that use the least: Watching internet TV 1. Surfing the internet 2. Global Positioning System (GPS) GPS is a navigational system used in many devices. It gives: current location directions from current location to specified destination distance from current location to specified destination It uses signals from satellites to do this. Assisted GPS (AGPS) has been developed for mobile phones. When the signal between the satellite and the phone is weak, mobile masts are used to identify the phone’s exact location instead. Mobile phone types There are different phones available for different purposes: Fashion phones These phones are targeted at fashion conscious people who use a lot of multimedia. They may have: Bright colours Ability to be customised e.g. change fascias High spec camera Ability to store large amounts of data e.g. photos and video Speakers to allow music to be played out loud Long lasting battery Unusual shape Find an example of a fashion phone. Mobile phone types There are different phones available for different purposes: Business phones These phones are targeted at people who want to use them for work. They may have: Slim, sleek design Black or metallic colours Large screen Qwerty keyboard Features including speaker phone and voice activated dialling Ability to synchronise with other devices 3G for Internet access Find an example of a business phone. Mobile phone types There are different phones available for different purposes: Multifunctional phones These phones combine both style and business features, appealing to the mass market rather than a niche. They have the best of both worlds: High spec features Large amounts of storage High speed processing Slim design with touch screen Access to the internet Find an example of a multifunctional phone.
