2 Starter: What is 3G? Find at least 3 facts and list them below. 3G
18% of worldwide mobile subscribers (1.1B people) have 3G subscriptions Two-thirds of the world's mobile data traffic will be video by 2016 Average smartphone data usage nearly tripled on 2011

3 Lesson Objectives: By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
describe how mobile broadband works give the advantages and disadvantages to users of mobile broadband make recommendations based on what you have learned about the limitations of mobile broadband understand different ways of working collaboratively

4 Watch this video:

5 Mobile broadband: Mobile broadband allows devices such as smart phones, laptops and netbooks to connect to a high speed internet connection over a wide geographical area, without the need for wires. Mobile broadband relies on the 3G network. (4G is currently becoming more and more widely available). Users can access the internet virtually anywhere that there is a mobile phone signal. Smart phones have 3G capability built in Laptops can be connected using a 3G dongle

6 Advantages: Disadvantages:
Those who use the internet for work are not restricted to using it only at home or the office. No landline or cable is needed to use the internet. More secure than Wi-Fi as the data is encrypted. Can act as a backup if your home broadband goes down. Disadvantages: In some places there is weak or no 3G reception. Can be expensive if you go over your data limit. Expensive roaming charges if used abroad. Could lead to stress if continually working outside of work hours.

7 Scenarios: Consider the following scenarios and decide whether or not mobile broadband is a good option. Give reasons for your answers Scenario Is mobile broadband a good option? Why? A woman selling handmade cards from home No, could lead to stress if continually working outside of work hours Students living in temporary accommodation Not really, can be expensive if you go over your data limit which students cannot afford. A business woman who travels to other countries regularly as part of her job No, expensive roaming charges if used abroad. A family on holiday on a remote island No, in some places there is weak or no 3G reception. A family living in a very built up city Yes, there will be very strong signals.

8 Collaborative working:
Collaborative working means working together with other people to achieve common goals. High speed internet connections mean that collaborative working can take place even when people are not physically together. Technology has helped people to work together in many ways: VoIP Video conferencing Conference calls File sharing Wikis Online forums Online work spaces

9 Choose 4 of the items from the previous slide.
For each one you should created a slide that includes: A title A definition An example of software that allows this to happen Use the next 4 blank slides to do this.

10 VoIP -Voice over Internet Protocol is a category of hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls by sending voice data in packets using IP rather than by traditional circuit transmissions of the PSTN.
