The Division of the Church

Gradual Process that becomes the Schism (Split in Church) Religion begins to develop differently in the East from that in the West Due to Distance Lack of contact East is flourishing West is in decline Over the course of hundreds of years this will eventually lead to the Great Schism.

Differences that bring about the Schism In the East Emperor is the head of the Church Appoints Patriarch(highest Church official) Greek is language of the Church Most important holiday is Easter In West Pope is the head of the church – kings answer to him. Latin is language of Church Most important holiday is Christmas

Fighting between the two sides 730 A.D. – Emperor Leo III bans the use of icons Argues that this is form of idol worship, which is not allowed. Byzantine Christians prayed to images of Christ, Virgin Mary and various saints. The Pope responds by excommunicating the Emperor Leaves lasting resentment between East and West
