New Heights and New Problems
As East and West grew apart, so did the two churches of the areas. Problems arose between the Catholic (Western) and Orthodox (Eastern) Churches. The Orthodox Church would not recognize the authority of the Pope. The Pope and the Patriarch excommunicated each other which led to a split between the two churches.

The Great Schism! In 1054 there was a formal split between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Eastern Church Centered in Constantinople Close to seat of power after Constantinople became capital Use of Greek language in the liturgy Was led by the Patriarch Has Easter as principal holiday Allowed clergy to marry Icons were for decoration only, although they were an important part of art, they were banned for a time and then restored again.

Icons are always two-dimensional because Orthodox Christians strictly obey the passage in the Bible which forbids graven images.

Western Church Centered in Rome Headed by the Pope Required clergy to be celibate Farther from seat of power after Constantinople became capital Use of Latin language in the liturgy Division between Western and Eastern Churches Authority of the Pope eventually accepted in the West Practices such as celibacy eventually accepted in the West
