Tuesday, October 20, 2009 Drill: In terms of World Cultures class, what is a colony? Write the letter and answer!! A group of ants living together. A group of organisms grown from a single parent cell. The settlement in one land ruled by the government of another country. One of 13 British colonies that formed the original states of the United States.

Objective: Students will read for information and complete a graphic organizer in order to identify why Africa was the continent most affected by European Colonialism.

Key Vocabulary Imperialism- A policy used by governments to extend their power over foreign places. Colonialism- The act of taking control of another, usually far off, country Colony- An area of land controlled by another, usually far off, country.

Geographic Reasons Why Africa was most affected by European Imperialism Europe and Africa are located very close to each other, the two continents are only miles apart. African geography isolates the people of Africa. Because African tribes were isolated they could not unite and defend themselves against the invading European armies.

Economic Reasons Why Africa was most affected by European Imperialism Europeans established colonies in Africa to take advantage of these resources and get rich. Africa became a new market for Europe to sell goods.
