1 New Imperialism

2 WHAT IS IMPERIALISM? Imperialism – The extension of a nation’s power over a foreign land. This is when one country rules another one, usually to control its resources or to hold it as a buffer zone.  New Imperialism – European nations start viewing Asian and African societies as both a source of raw materials and a market for their goods. Before Westerners traded gold for commodities like tea, pepper, silk, now they sell goods from their factories for resources.

3 DIRECT / INDIRECT RULE Indirect Rule – Cheaper and easier to let local authorities continue to rule. No training of officials, already understand customs, language and culture. Local elites rule and collect taxes for the foreign power and get paid by the foreigners. This system relies on native people who are willing to rule their own people for a foreign government.

4 DIRECT/ INDIRECT RULE Direct Rule – Oftentimes natives would not accept foreign rule, in which case the government was replaced by officials from the invading country resulting in direct rule. It was also common to justify this by claiming to bring the advantages of Western society with their governments, such as education. Yet in practice most imperialist nations had no intention of giving locals political rights.

5 TYPES OF FOREIGN CONTROL DIRECT CONTROL
The desire for Direct Control - Europeans had originally kept small trading outposts in foreign lands, but the more industry started taking off the more resources that were needed. Under “New Imperialism,” Europe’s countries start to seek full authority of foreign lands. This means they control the flow of resources(rubber, oil, tin, cotton)and have more markets to sell their manufactured goods in.

6 REASONS FOR EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM
1)Economic –Control Resources and Trade Routes

7 REASONS FOR EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM
2) National prestige - the thought that the greater a nation was the more foreign land it controls. (Germany)

8 REASONS FOR EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM
3) Social Darwinism/ Manifest Destiny – the thought that superior nations filled with superior talents and people were simply taking what they deserved from inferior people.

9 REASONS FOR EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM
4) Religious/Humanitarian/ “white man’s burden” -Europeans had a moral responsibility to help the “heathen masses” by bringing the word of Christianity/ Democracy and Capitalism to “uncivilized” peoples.
