5 Why might the Europeans have found Africa difficult to explore?
WHAT TOOK SO LONG?! Why might the Europeans have found Africa difficult to explore? Foreign invasions were prevented for a long time due to Africa's geography, however, it became a target for conquest by Europeans. Although Africa is physically distant from the power centers of Europe, North America, and Asia, the continent is surrounded by water and can therefore be reached easily from the other continents. Why do you think Europeans were interested in Africa? What do you think motivated them to explore and conquer the land?

6 Imperialism: Analyzing Documents – 30 min
Purposeful Reading discover the motivations behind European exploration and colonization of Africa Checkpoint Questions: What is imperialism? Why were Europeans attracted to Africa? What is nationalism? How might nationalism lead to conflict? For this activity, we will complete a document analysis exercise where you will discover the motivations behind European exploration and colonization or settlement of Africa.  Say: There are 4 documents in this activity and we will start with Document A. First, we are going to complete a pre-reading and analysis activity. Have students read the section title from Document A and scan the text. Possible Think Aloud statements: I imagine that Europeans coming into Africa greatly changed the lives and lifestyles of the people living there. I wonder how many European countries colonized the lands of Africa. Say: I will use the information presented in the excerpt to answer the first question. According to the text, imperialism is the domination (control) by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country. Possible Think Aloud statement/response: In my own words, this makes me think that imperialism occurs when a country seeks to take over another country and control how it operates economically, politically, and socially.

8 Guided Practice: Cause and Effect (15 min)
Use your knowledge of Imperialism in Africa and your notes to determine the effects of each cause. Using what you have learned in the previous activity, you will now complete a cause and effect exercise within your respective groups.  For this activity, you will read the cause located in the first column and determine its effect.

9 Cultural Diffusion Review
What is cultural diffusion? Could cultural diffusion occur in Africa during European imperialism? Provide examples of products, ideas or culture characteristics that may spread among these cultures.

10 RAFT Writing (10 min) Today I am [insert emotion]… 5-7 sentences
3-4 thoughts of the Zulu warrior Use evidence from background to support thoughts. Using the background information to guide your writing, individually, you will now complete the RAFT writing assignment. You will play the role of a Young Zulu Warrior creating a journal entry about the invasion of Europeans on Zulu lands.  You will have 5 minutes to complete this assignment.
