Goals: To build on the basic language arts skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, language, and literature. To help students enjoy language as art and entertainment. To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. To help students discover new interests in reading and writing.

Classroom Expectations: Respect yourself and the other people in this room. Follow directions the first time they’re given. Raise your hand for permission to speak and to leave your seat. Make smart choices. Keep your teacher happy!  More details are available on my class website. Talk about consequences!!!!

Materials: 5 subject dividers labeled: Filler paper “Caught Yas” “Literature” “Figurative Language” “Writing” “Grammar” Filler paper 2 blue and/or black pens 1 red pen Pencil and eraser Highlighter 1 (2- pocket) folder for the writing portfolio Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) book

Units of Study: Coming of Age Courage Heroes Literary Nonfiction: Red Scarf Girl Courage Historical fiction: Out of the Dust and Number the Stars Heroes Heroic Legends: The Sword in the Stone

Other Topics: 6+1 Traits of Writing Ideas Organization Voice Word choice Sentence fluency Conventions Presentation Grammar, Vocabulary, and Figurative Language Will be taught throughout the year to enhance writing skills.

Homework Assignments: All homework will be related to what we are studying in class. When I have not assigned anything specifically, I expect students to read for at least 15 minutes a night. Occasionally, students will work on long-term projects, but we will get started on them in school.

Grading Policy: Writing/Projects 30% Classwork 45% Assessments 15% Homework 10% ASPEN is the Howard County online grade book that will be used by all teachers. Please check your child’s academic progress throughout the school year. If you need assistance with accessing ASPEN, please contact Michelle Bharmal, Data Clerk, at 410-313-2844.
