Goal for this year: Intermediate low/mid Español 1 Sra. Brenda J. Castañeda Contact information: bcastaneda@madisoncity.k12.al.us At the end of this course students should be able to say the following “I can…” statements. speak in phrases and short sentences (some memorized). talk about familiar subjects. describe surroundings and people. give time, date, and weather info. give opinions on things I like/dislike with clarification. use connecting words and prepositions. ask simple questions (“and you”). respond to language that I read and hear. Recite short poems, rhymes and idioms Gesture to enhance comprehension, use cognates to connect with prior knowledge and use high frequency idiomatic expressions. Goal for this year: Intermediate low/mid Our mission: OWL or Organic World Language acquisition. To provide a space for positive collaboration to create active learning environments that foster student engagement and empowerment. What you need for Español: One inch 3 ring binder with 3-5 dividers Loose leaf paper Dry erase markers Glue sticks Colored pencils Highlighter Blue/black pens and pencils Pocket dictionary (optional) Class expectations: Always Respect Always Participate Always in Target Language 3 bathroom passes every 9 weeks No food once in class. No unauthorized cell phone use. This course is conducted in Spanish. Immersion is proven to be the most effective path to proficiency in a second language. It is normal for students to feel frustrated and lost at the beginning. Trust the process. We will have time dedicated to speaking English and clearing up misunderstandings.

Other topics will be explored based on student interest. 1st 9wks: Grades & Make-ups --Daily grades will be 30% of your nine week grade. Test (this includes quizzes) grades will be 70% of your nine week grade. The final exam is worth one-fifth of your final average. --Make ups Assignments for the week will be posted online as given in class.. It is the student’s responsibility to check available resources. If the student is absent one day only, the student is expected to be prepared for class when he or she returns. This includes tests and quizzes. In cases of prolonged absences or extenuating circumstances, more time will be allowed. The attendance policy of the school will be followed in this course. Make-up tests and quizzes for excused absences will be given on Friday mornings at 7:15 in the World Language classroom B217. Students are encouraged to be prompt in order to complete the make-up test by 8:00. (All tests will be taken up at that time) Patriot Path make-up sessions may also be offered in a WL classroom. Using speaking, listening, reading and writing strategies we will explore the following topics as well as target language cultural awareness through music, video, literature and other authentic materials. These topics will be practiced in present and past time frames throughout the course. Other topics will be explored based on student interest. 1st 9wks: Greetings and Introductions Weather and Days of the week People and Descriptions Likes and dislikes Activities Food Clothing Time and schedules Spanish Speaking countries 2nd 9wks School Family Age Birthday and Calendars Clothing and Colors Location Past times Transportation 6 GOALS to accomplish our mission... To not be afraid of a second language environment Take risks and break down the filter (it’s ok to make mistakes) To be able to infer and circumlocute To use the second language 100% of the time To participate and be a part of a community To cultivate intrinsic motivation and student empowerment Technology: Access at home needed. Use of electronic devices in class will be at the discretion of the instructor. Neither teacher nor school is responsible for stolen, broken or lost devices.
