Effects of World War I

11/11 at 11 am…

# 1 Russian Revolution Russia’s lack of industrialization leads to shortages of food and military equipment and the people overthrow the government and eventually replace with communism!

# 2 Human Casualties over 8.5 million soldiers killed 17 million + wounded famine threatened many regions disease was widespread in many regions

# 3 Psychological Impact Why did so many people die? Loss of faith in reason established in Enlightenment Einstein – In 1905 he had his “golden year” producing 4 groundbreaking discoveries in Science including the theory of relativity = the world much more difficult to understand than initially thought during the Enlightenment. Freud - People mainly make decisions based on irrational unconscious (animal instincts) or unconscious forces that have been suppressed, not always reason. Nietzche – existentialism – there is no purpose to life and no god These new psychological discoveries began to shake the theory that humans could perfect themselves & society through reason.

#4 Social Problems Total war meant that governments needed help from women as never before. Thousands of women replaced men in factories, offices, and shops. Women built tanks and weapons, plowed fields, paved streets, and ran hospitals. They also kept troops supplied with food, clothing, and weapons. This is going to challenge gender roles after the war.

# 4 Economic Problems Factories, farms, and homes were destroyed The war drained the treasuries of European countries. One account put the total cost of the war at $338 Billion! German Inflation (devaluation of money from overprinting during war)

# 5 Harsh Provisions for Germany Territorial Losses Eastern part of Germany given to newly formed Poland Alsace-Lorraine given back to France forced to give up colonies in Africa and China Military Restrictions army size limited, navy no subs, no air force allowed Forced to remove troops from the Rhineland (area between France and Germany) War Reparations

# 6 Collapse of Empires Break-Up of Austria Hungary now: Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia Break-Up of Ottoman Empire Turkey GB Mandate of Palestine (modern Israel) GB Mandate of Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) French Mandate of Lebanon (modern Lebanon) French Mandate of Syria (modern Syria)
