Freud - People mainly make decisions based on irrational unconscious (animal instincts) or unconscious forces that have been suppressed, not always reason.
Nietzche – existentialism – there is no purpose to life and no god
These new psychological discoveries began to shake the theory that humans could perfect themselves & society through reason.

Total war meant that governments needed help from women as never before. Thousands of women replaced men in factories, offices, and shops.
Women built tanks and weapons, plowed fields, paved streets, and ran hospitals. They also kept troops supplied with food, clothing, and weapons.
This is going to challenge gender roles after the war.
