4 Treaty of Versailles Signed at the Paris Peace Conference by all Major combatant countries. It’s goal was to punish Germany. Germany had to accept total blame for the war. Had to pay war reparations to the Allies. Total amount paid was approx $5 billion US. (Germany had to get loans [mostly from US banks] to pay off the reparations. Germany paid off its final loans linked to the treaty in 2010). Germany had to give up its Submarines and Air Force and could only keep 6 battleships and an army of 100,000 men. Most of its railroad system was dismantled. Allowed foreign troops to be stationed in sectors of Germany. Lost significant territory in Europe. (See Map) The Harshness of the Treaty created an unstable peace in Europe. Germany was sent into a 2 decade long economic depression.

7 Political Changes At the Paris Peace Conference, Robert Borden helped pass Resolution IX which stated that the dominions of GB were to be recognized as independent nations (this included Canada). The Soldier Settlement Act gave free land and money to Canadian soldiers coming back from the war to start farms and for post-secondary education. The League of Nations was established to ensure another world war did not take place. Canada would play a major role in this.
