Genital Warts (Human Papillomavirus) Description Pink or reddish warts that have cauliflower-like tops Caused by a Virus Symptoms: Female & Male Warts appear on genitals 1-3 months after exposure to infection Treatment for the warts - Application of prescription skin method. Extra Information Virus never goes away. HPV can cause cervical cancer in females.

Chlamydia – The “Silent” Disease Description Most prevalent of all STDs; 4 Million Cases reported each year in the United States alone. Cause Bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis Can be transmitted in vaginal, anal or oral sex Symptoms: Female Not always obvious Unusual discharge

Chlamydia (Continued) Symptoms: Female (Cont.) Pain in the Pelvic region Painful urination Can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) Symptoms: Male Pain and burning with urination Unusual discharge from penis Occurs 1-3 weeks after exposure

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 usually causes cold sores. Type 2 usually causes genital sores. Both types infect the mouth and genitals. Type 2 Description Genital herpes Blister-like sores in the genital area Incurable STD 30 million Americans have it!!! Cause Virus From sexual contact only

Genital Herpes (Continued) Symptoms: Female & Male Painful, itching sores in or around the genitals Sores appear 2-20 days after contact with an infected person Lasts up to three weeks Fever Burning during urination Can spread to other areas of the body.

Genital Herpes (Continued) Treatment There is no cure for Herpes Simplex Virus!! There is medication that can be diagnosed to help heal (Valtrex). Valtrex can be used as a suppression method as well. Extra Info - Stress, fatigue, overexposure to sunlight, and illness can increase chances of recurring outbreaks.

Gonorrhea Description Cause One of the most frequently reported 2 million cases reported in the United States each year. Cause Bacteria that lives in warm, moist areas of the body, primarily the lining of the urethra in males and the cervix in females.

Gonorrhea Symptoms: Male Symptoms: Female Whitish discharge from penis Burning sensation with urination Swollen lymph nodes in groin Symptoms: Female Slight discharge Burning with urination Abnormal menstruation Abdominal pain or tenderness

Gonorrhea (Continued) Treatment Antibiotics are usually used for treatment Follow-up necessary Doctor is the only person that can diagnose Extra Information Can be re-infected if exposed again. Can cause sterility for males and females.

Trichomoniasis (Only Slide) Caused by microscopic protozoan that results in infections of the vagina, urethra, and bladder. Disease may result in vaginitis, or inflammation of the vagina. Males usually show no symptoms. Treatment is Antibiotics.

Syphilis Description Three different stages Attacks many parts of the body One of the most dangerous types of STDs When left untreated, it can damage vital organs, such as the heart, liver, kidneys, and the central nervous system.

Syphilis (Continued) Cause Symptoms: Female Small bacterium called spirochete and Treponema pallidum Symptoms: Female Fever Sore throat General sick feeling Can be passed from mother to unborn child

Syphilis (Continued) Symptoms: Male Treatment Swollen lymph nodes under arms and in the groin area Treatment Penicillin Follow-up strongly recommended Early treatment is CRUCIAL!

Vaginitis Description Cause A common inflammation of the female genitals Can be carried by males Many types exist Cause Microscopic Organisms

Vaginitis Symptoms: Female Symptoms: Male Treatment Severe itching in the genitals Increased amount of discharge Symptoms: Male Few or no symptoms Treatment Antibiotics

Pubic Lice (Pthirus pubis) Description Tiny insects called lice attach themselves to skin & hair in pubic area Feed on blood and cause intense itching Cause Lice, insects that are parasites resemble tiny crabs

Scabies Description/Cause Symptoms: Female & Male Infestation of skin by mites that cause red, swollen, itchy bumps on skin by burrowing into the skin. Symptoms: Female & Male Itching in genital area, 4-6 weeks after exposure to infection Mites can be spread to forearms or fingers Treatment: Hot baths and medicated creams

Abstinence The commitment taken by teenagers and young adults to abstain from sexual activity until marriage. Abstinence is the ONLY 100% way to prevent all of these sexually transmitted diseases and Unwanted Pregnancy!
