Why does development vary among genders?

What is Gender? "Sex" refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women. "Gender" refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women.  *This doesn’t have anything to do with the conversation of sexuality, gender identity, or gender expression… That’s another topic

Sex Ratio

Case Study – Missing Girls Missing Girls Documentary

The Role of Women Different societies and different cultures have developed, over time, very specific gender roles. Gendered Spaces are areas in which particular genders of people, and particular types of gender expression, are considered welcome or appropriate, and other types are unwelcome or inappropriate. The Public-Private Divide

The Public-Private Divide This may be reinforced explicitly through legal means. Yemen- A women is half a witness in trials Saudi Arabia – Women will vote for the first time this year Yemen- Women most receive husbands permission to leave the home This may be completely informal or socially mandated “Women in the kitchen” Jokes 104 of the 535 Congressional seats are held by women More than 100 for the first time ever

Rank Economy Score 1 Iceland 0.8594 2 Finland 0.8453 3 Norway 0.8374 4 Sweden 0.8165 5 Denmark 0.8025 6 Nicaragua 0.7894 7 Rwanda* 0.7854 8 Ireland 0.7850 9 Philippines 0.7814 10 Belgium 0.7809 11 Switzerland 0.7798 12 Germany 0.7780 13 New Zealand 0.7772 14 Netherlands 0.7730 15 Latvia 0.7691 16 France 0.7588 17 Burundi 0.7565 18 South Africa 0.7527 19 Canada 0.7464 20 United States 0.7463 Gender Gap Index The report examines four critical areas of inequality between men and women. Economic participation and opportunity – outcomes on salaries, participation levels and access to high- skilled employment Educational attainment – outcomes on access to basic and higher level education Political empowerment – outcomes on representation in decision-making structures Health and survival – outcomes on life expectancy and sex ratio. In this case parity is not assumed, there are assumed to be less female births than male (944 female for every 1,000 males), and men are assumed to die younger. Provided that women live at least six percent longer than men parity is assumed, if it is less than six percent it counts as a gender gap. World Economic Forum

UK – Case Study

GII UN created the Gender Inequality Index (GII) that is based on multiple metrics. Empowerment Defined: Ability of women to achieve improvements in status. Percentage of seats held by women in the national legislature. Percentage of women who have completed high school. Labor Force Female labor force participation rate defined as percentage of women holding full-time jobs outside the home. Highest in developed countries. Reproductive Health Maternal mortality ratio Adolescent fertility rate

Some places are improving… UN asserts gender inequality has declined in nearly every country since the 1990s. Greatest improvements in Southwest Asia and North Africa. U.S. is one of few developed countries where the GII has increased. Reproductive rights much lower in U.S. compared to other very high HDI countries. Percentage of women in the national legislature is relatively lower than other high HDI countries.
