Make Up Work – When It’s Due UIL Absence/Field Trip (does not count against exemptions) Absence (counts against exemptions) Work is still due on original date (including tests and quizzes) Come to take tests and quizzes early Send your work with a friend or drop it off early Work not turned in on time will be counted late No extra time to make up work (since you know in advance and it’s not an absence) Work due the day you missed is due the day you return (if you miss the day something is due, bring it with you when you come to school) You have the number of days you missed plus one to make up work assigned while you were out

Make Up Work – When It Becomes Late (district policy) UIL Absence / Field Trip Absences If it is not turned in before your absence (or the day it is due by someone who is there), it’s late If you knew about a quiz or test and didn’t arrange to take it before your absence, it can be counted late Be sure to think ahead so you do not have this problem After the number of days you have to make up your work passes, the make up work policy applies Be sure to email or come by to get work so you do not have this problem

Make Up Work – “Did we do anything?” Yes. We always do something in class.

Make Up Work – How To Get It Email Mrs. Laffin or come before or after school (even if you are coming before/after school, you might want to check to see if she will be there before you show up– she has meetings and does other things if she doesn’t know anyone is coming) You can check the make up work box when you get to class (before the bell, not while Mrs. Laffin is teaching). You can check with someone who was here to get a rundown, but also check with Mrs. Laffin Please do not ask Mrs. Laffin right before class begins to give you a rundown of what you missed. It is difficult to explain 50 minutes of class in one minute. That is not a sufficient plan for getting your make up work for English. Email or come before/after school.

Make Up Work – How To Turn It In You can hand Mrs. Laffin make up work before class starts or, if there is some work time during class, you can do it then if it is not a distraction from the lesson You can also give it to Mrs. Laffin as you are leaving class You can give it to the lady at the front desk (not attendance) to put in my box if I’m not there It is a dangerous mistake to shove it under the door, give it to a sub, or put it on Mrs. Laffin’s mess of a desk. If something goes missing after you did this, that does not excuse your late/missing work.

Late Work If a hard copy was submitted on time Late to turnitin.com Late during the day it was due If a hard copy was submitted on time -5 per day late to turnitin.com If a hard copy was NOT submitted on time Regular late work policies apply For example, it was due during English 1st period. You didn’t have it. You printed it during advocate and turned it in before you left that day. Academic achievement: -10 Academic practice: Regular late work policy applies (-50)

Before you come to class… Complete any homework assignments due and have them ready to turn in when you get to class Heading in the top left corner Should be stapled and organized before class Any questions about the assignment should be asked before the assignment is due Why before class? If you wait until you get to class to get your papers organized, you might be missing something, and then your paper will be late : ( I plan lessons for the day that do not include time for students to take care of things that are easy to take care of before class

When you come to class… Grab the handout from the table Check the SmartBoard for the homework and bellwork Do the bellwork I don’t mind if you do this and then if you finish, start a conversation with someone who is also finished. I do ask that when you get to class, you do this and allow others to do this before conversing. Unless I specifically say otherwise, keep your phone in your bag or pocket, not on your desk. You are not welcome to use your device (including texting) during class (including during work time).

When you come to class… Be respectful Complete the assigned activities Stay on task during work time Do not work on something for another class or it will be confiscated and can be picked up at the end of the day Participate in discussions Refrain from talking while Mrs. Laffin is addressing the class Mrs. Laffin will always address the class immediately after the bell rings. Please consider the bell a signal to be quiet so she can do so. Treat other students with respect by meeting the above expectations

When completing assignments… First, place your heading in the top left hand corner Work with no name will not receive credit If you need time to write your name on your work when you get to class, it may be counted late (since it should be ready to turn in when you get to class) Complete your work before you come to class, including stapling and organizing it I expect work to be ready to submit, so I do not plan class time for organizing/stapling papers; please do not waste my time and your fellow students’ time by not coming to class prepared If you wait until you come to class to staple and organize papers, you may realize then that you are missing something

If you need help… Please do not wait until the day an assignment is due to ask questions about it– if it’s not ready when it’s due, it’s late. You can email Mrs. Laffin for help, but please do so in advance. Although you may stay up late the night before a paper is due, Mrs. Laffin does not stay up late in case someone emails her. She has an early bedtime. If you’d like to come for help in person, Mrs. Laffin is available after school. She may have duty or a meeting, though, so you will want to check before stopping by. Mrs. Laffin does not generally do drop-in morning tutorials, but if you need one, you can talk to her to schedule one.
