Document No: GSC17-PLEN-25 Source: ARIB Contact: Tadaaki YOKOO (ARIB) Hisakazu KATOH (NHK) Yushi TORIGOE (ARIB) GSC Session: PLEN Agenda Item: 6.8 IPTV Integrated Broadcast-Broadband (IBB) Systems - Enhanced Content Delivery Systems in Collaboration with IP- Presenter: Yushi TORIGOE Director, Planning and International Affairs Department ARIB

Highlight of Current Activities Integrated Broadcast-Broadband (IBB) Systems are emerged IBB Systems are discussed in ITU-R / ITU-T Hybridcast is an IBB system developed in Japan Standard specifications for Hybridcast has been completed at ARIB & IPTV-Forum Japan Hybridcast enhances broadcast services by simultaneous use of Internet content Hybridcast is using HTML5 Hybridcast service will start soon

Strategic Direction (1/2) Realize attractive Hybridcast Services Use of a HTML5 application associated with broadcasting Synchronized presentation of main program and Internet content Use of big screen (TV) and second screen (smart phones or tablets) Broadcaster Service Provider Broadcaster Service Provider Broadcasting content Web service Broadcasting content Web Service Program related content Main program Sync. Internet Internet Data for apps. Just switching each content on TV Mush up both content on each screen TV Second screen Conventional connected TV Hybridcast

Strategic Direction (2/2) Provide safe information to viewers When disaster occurs, emergency warnings form broadcasting are given priority on receivers Provide reliable and secure information to viewers Keep off unintended behavior from malicious activities Provide new business opportunities For broadcasters, network operators, service providers, content providers and manufacturers

Challenges Preservation of content integrity for protecting rights holders from unlawful activities Effective production of various program related content for broadcasters Introduction of accurate cross-stream synchronization

Next Steps / Actions Early establishment of world standard for IBB systems Collaboration with network operators to allow concentration of viewers’ access to program related content

Proposed Resolution It is proposed to add the following sentences to the present resolution:   Considering: e) that technologies for newly emerged integrated broadcast-broadband (IBB) systems could be of value to enrich IPTV services further. Resolves: - also encourage the exchange of information on enhanced content delivery systems in collaboration with IP for IBB systems.

Supplementary Slides

System concept of Hybridcast Big Screen (high-quality, enjoy together) Broadcasting (simultaneity, high-quality, high-reliability) Enriched & enhanced program viewing Broadcaster Broadcast program backward compatibility Broadcasters can use both channels & know how program works Application execution Provides services in conjunction with broadcasting Synchronization The cloud Communications network (responds to viewers’ request) Service Provider (incl. non-broadcasters) Presentation control Hybridcast receiver Device linkage taro Small Screen (Portable, Personal)

Examples of Application for Hybridcast Recommend related VOD contents “Second-Screen” as a smart controller and an additional display Support for disaster (View remote camera picture) Multi-view camera CG-based Sign Language with Synchronous Technology
