1 Karen Bartleson, President, IEEE Standards Association
Document No: GSC17-PLEN-72 Source: IEEE Contact: Karen Bartleson GSC Session: PLEN Agenda Item: 6.9 HIS – Smart Grid Karen Bartleson, President, IEEE Standards Association The Smart Grid initiative is the modernization and optimization of the power grid so that it is more reliable, efficient, secure, and environmentally neutral. For the Smart Grid initiative to be successful, it requires collaboration, integration, and interoperability between an array of disciplines, including computational and communications control systems for generation, transmission, distribution, customer, operations, markets, and service provider

2 Highlight of Current Activities
Providing leadership in the development & deployment of smart grid technologies Acting as a catalyst for change & innovation across the smart grid ecosystem Our activities support the full life cycle of standards--from concept or incubation to market acceptance & use We are developing a pipeline of standards related activities Smart grid technology research & education Market implementation programs Pre-standards activities Accelerated standards activities Post- standards activities IEEE is the only organization able to thoroughly provide the diversity of expertise, information, resources, and vision needed to realize the Smart Grid’s full promise and potential. For that reason, IEEE is uniquely qualified for its leadership role in the development and deployment of Smart Grid technologies. As it quickly advances from the theoretical to the concrete, IEEE will continue to act as a catalyst for change and innovation across the Smart Grid ecosystem.

3 Highlight of Current Activities
Smart grid equipment standards are needed to handle information data management, communications & control Need for a flexible smart grid system – interoperability, design & operational standards will allow near-term and long-term smart grid evolution Development of a body of interoperability smart grid standards is essential for the smart grid to operate IEEE is collaborating with global stakeholders to develop smart grid standards that will extend across the entire grid

4 Strategic Direction Engaging participants from around the world in pre-standardization discussions, standards development & market acceptance activities Leveraging IEEE's global community of experts from the Power Engineering, Communications & Information Technology sectors Collaborating with national & international organizations (IEC, SAE) Developing & sharing research for smart grid in conferences & other venues around the world Providing a venue where the best minds come together to innovate & work together to advance smart grid technology for the benefit of humanity

5 Challenges The cost of transitioning to "smarter" grids from existing grids, i.e. equipment and operational costs Differences in existing grid architectures around the world Important to ensure an open, collaborative environment where all experts can participate

6 Next Steps / Actions Facilitate development of standards & bringing them to market Continue education on smart grid technologies & standards Engage in collaboration opportunities Ensure open innovation to support multi-faceted & integrated solutions to address modern energy delivery that is reliable, environmentally friendly, economically viable & secure
