What we are going to cover: Introduction to Year 1 The New National Curriculum Maths English- Reading/Writing Phonics Screening Check Homework How to support your child What you need to know Question time

An introduction to Year 1: We build upon key skills and learning from Reception. Elements of English and Maths are introduced in Early Years which are then developed more extensively in Year 1. We recognise that Key Stage 1 (Infants Year 1/2) is different from the Foundation Stage and therefore we aim to manage the transition from Reception to Year 1 in a gradual, staged approach, which allows the children to adapt during the Autumn Term. In Year 1 children are taught to become more independent and responsible for their work.

What is the National Curriculum? Set of subjects and standards that ensure children across the country all learn the same things to the same standard. KS1 Maths English Reciprocal Reading Handwriting Science Computing PE Music History Geography Art Design and Technology

Year 1- Yearly overview

Maths It is vital that children; *Know their number bonds to 10 and 20 (eg. 8+2=10 and 18+2=20). * Count up to 100 (forwards and backwards) *Count in 2s, 5s and 10s *2D and 3D Shapes *Time (O'clock and half past) We will be sending home the calculations policy so you can use the same methods at home as we do at school.

English – Reading and Writing The new English Curriculum includes the following areas; Word Reading and Comprehension. Handwriting Composing stories Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation.

Reading- cannot stress the importance Books are changed Three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), if their reading record has been signed. Reciprocal Reading with their Teacher Choose their Library book once a week (1S-Wednesdays and 1OC Mondays) Children will be moved onto a new book band when they are ready (fluency and comprehension). It is not a race! Please don’t ask when your child will be moved on as we will only move your child on when they are ready. We always need parent helpers to listen children read (8:45-9.00, sign your name at the end).

Writing Children are expected to begin to; *Use handwriting rules *Write longer pieces of writing *Use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces *Use adjectives

Phonics Screening Check In Year 1, the children are required to take the Phonics Screening Check in June. Children have a phonics lesson everyday where they revise and learn new sounds from ‘Letters and Sounds program’. This checks the children’s ability to blend the sounds we have covered in real and unknown (nonsense) words. During the check each child will sit with a teacher and read aloud the 40 words contained in the check. We will share the results from the check by a letter at the end of the summer term.

Homework Children will be issued reading books (We aim to hear the all read at least once a week and a comment will be written in their reading record) . Homework will be issued on: Mondays- English and spellings Wednesdays- Maths All homework should be returned in their red homework folders on Fridays.

How to support your child At home: Read with them every night and sign their reading records. Support them with their homework, it does not help your child if you or older siblings do it for them! Play listening and concentration games At school: Communicate with staff if your child is having difficulties (Class Teacher, TA) using their green communications book. Termly newsletter on the website Parents evening meetings

What you need to know. Spellings test will take place on Fridays in their spelling book. Number bonds test, we will be starting this in the next few weeks. Children will take their spellings book home on Friday’s and they need to be returned on Mondays. Please send in: labelled water bottles, labelled P.E kits, book bags and all clothing should be labelled. PE days (1S- Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1OC Mondays and Wednesdays). Book bags with reading books should be in school everyday.

Other information Trips *Tuesday 8th November 2016 – Bedfords Park, based on our Science topic (We will need Parent Helpers so keep an eye out for the letter). Behaviour *Rights Respecting Award- Level 1 *Positive impact on children’s behaviour and learning *Global citizens By the end of this week you will receive a parent pack which will have this powerpoint and other useful resources to support your child.

Thank you for listening. Do you have any questions?
