3 An introduction to Year 1: We build upon key skills and learning from Reception. Elements of Literacy and Mathematics are introduced in Early Years which are then developed more extensively in Year 1. We recognise that Key Stage 1 (Infants Year 1/2) is different from the Foundation Stage and therefore we aim to manage the transition from Reception to Year 1 in a gradual, staged approach, which allows the children to adapt during the Autumn Term.

8 Reading Books are changed once a week, two new books Guided reading Visit the local library Children will be moved onto a new book band when they are ready (fluency and comprehension). It is not a race! We always need parent helpers Please don’t ask when your child will be moved on as we will only move your child on when they are ready.

9 Phonics Screening Check In Year 1, the children are required to take the Phonics Screening Check in June. This checks the children’s ability to blend the sounds we have covered in real and unknown (alien) words. During the check each child will sit with a teacher and read aloud the 40 words contained in the check. We will share the results from the check by a letter at the end of the summer term.

14 Worries you might have Will my child be challenged? Supported? Will my child be expected to sit at a desk for long periods of time? Will they still learn through play-based activities? Will my children know who their teacher is and which classroom they are in before the end of term? How are the children grouped in the classroom? Will they go into ‘sets’?

15 Thank you for listening. Do you have any questions?
