8 How we teach Maths Practical based Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract
Strong number knowledge Can they apply it?

9 Concrete We give all our children hands on experiences using real objects. It is the foundation for conceptual understanding.

10 Pictorial Using representations, such as a diagram or a picture of the problem.

11 Abstract Children are now able to represent problems using notation, for example: 12+6=

Fluency Rapid recall of number facts Year 1: All number bonds to 20 Year 2: Using all of these facts to derive related facts to 100 Multiplication of 2s, 5s and 10s

13 Maths Arithmetic Paper 1
The guidance time for this test is 20 minutes. Questions are context free. Focus is speed and accuracy – ‘recall and use known facts’, encourages pupils to use efficient calculation strategies. NO apparatus can be used to support pupils to access questions. Marks will not be awarded for working out. Every question is worth one mark.

16 Maths Reasoning Paper 2 The guidance time for this test is 35 minutes.
Reflects current KS1 test question ‘style’ with raised expectations in line with current National Curriculum. This paper will contain ‘working mark’ questions – 1 mark for appropriate working but incorrect answer. The test will contain a mixture of contextualised and context-free questions, and real life and abstract problems. Language will be appropriate to key stage 1 and questions can be read to the children; word length will be kept to a minimum for accessibility reasons. The only apparatus that can be used to support the children are rulers

23 Reading A solid foundation in reading is crucial to your child’s success as they progress through primary school, into secondary school and then in later life.

24 Our aims are to… Encourage children to develop a love of books
Teach children how to decode words using phonics and other strategies Give children the opportunity to talk about books that they have read Help children to develop the skills of deduction and inference (reading between the lines)

29 Questions to ask your child…
Look at the front cover. What could the book be about? Who is the author? Who is the illustrator? What does an illustrator do? What does that word mean? Read the words around it to help you figure it out. (context) How can you read an unfamiliar word? Can you blend to work it out?

30 Year 1 Phonics Four key principles:
Sounds (phonemes) are represented by letters (graphemes) A sound (phoneme) can be represented by more than one letter We have different ways to spell different sounds Occasionally we use the same letters to represent different sounds

31 Year 1 Phonics Towards the end of Year 1 all children will take part in a National phonics screening test. They will be asked to read a selection of real and ‘alien’ words.
