5. Reading Every week your child will bring home 3 reading books:
A guided reading book
Home reader
Soon they will also bring home a library book.
All children need to read each day, please record any comments in their reading record.
We will change the books about once a week.
Need to point out-child must read each day

6. Reading Record
The reading record should be signed every day after your child reads.
Individual reading books, guided reading books, library books and books from home should all be recorded.
There will be reading rewards over the year.
Disco, teddy bear picnic etc

7. Reading Certificates
Every time you hear your child read and record it in their reading record they will receive a sticker on their bookmark.

8. Completed bookmarks result in your child getting a certificate.

9. Guided Reading
Guided reading takes place every day. Children are divided into groups; rotating between guided reading with a teacher and independent reading related activities.
The guided reading books are sent home weekly, and will have their guided reader bookmark inside.

10. Questions to ask your child when reading
Talk to the children about the books. Ask children to predict what might happen in the story. Discuss emotions and feelings. Describe the characters. Can they tell you what just happened in the story? Relate book to real life. Look out for new vocabulary.

11. Phonics
Children will take part in a whole class phonics lesson (Letters and Sounds), which will take place every day for 20 minutes. There will be Phonic Parent Workshops early next term.

12. Explorer’s Homework
In Year 1, we are introducing a new homework theme called Explorers.
We wanted our pupils to be excited about homework, therefore the type of homework will vary each week. E.g. games, verbal, written or activity.
Homework is given out every Friday to be returned completed on a Wednesday. We expect that this will be completed to a high standard.
Homework will include Maths, English and Spellings.
Varied type of homework- games, activities, written, verbal

13. Homework
Every week there will be a task sheet telling you what the children need to do for their homework.
If your child finds the task difficult or any other problems arise please write this in the parent comment box.

14. Spellings
Spellings will be sent home every week in their homework books. There will be between 6 and 10 words each week. The list will follow a phonetic spelling pattern they have learnt that week.
The children will be tested on these words the following Wednesday. They will receive a certificate if they get full marks.

15. PE
Children must have a white T shirt, black shorts and plimsolls for PE in the hall during bad weather and trainers for outside during good weather. All P.E kit should be clearly named with your child's full name.
P.E. kits should remain in school all week.

16. Maths By the end of Year 1 children should:
count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning from any given number
count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals;
count in multiples of twos, fives and tens
identify one more and one less than a given number
read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words.
read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (–) and equals (=) signs
represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20
solve one-step problems involving multiplication and division, by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the support of the teacher.

17. Writing By the end of Year 1 children should write sentences by:
saying out loud what they are going to write about
composing a sentence orally before writing it
sequencing sentences to form short narratives
re-reading what they have written to check that it makes sense
discuss what they have written with the teacher or other pupils
read aloud their writing clearly enough to be heard by their peers and the teacher.

18. Reading By the end of Year 1 children should:
apply phonic knowledge and skills to read new words
read words, noting alternative sounds e.g.. oo in look and oo zoo
read words containing familiar sounds
read and understand word endings including –s, –es, –ing, –ed, –er and –est
read other words of more than one syllable that contain known sounds
read I’m, I’ll, we’ll and understand the use of the apostrophe
read books fluently without needing to sound out words

19. Spelling By the end of year 1 children should spell:
words containing each of the 40+ phonemes already taught
common exception words
the days of the week
using letter names to distinguish between alternative spellings of the same sound

20. Transition from Reception to Year 1
For the first half term, children will still have the opportunity for Child Initiated Learning. We will call this Independent Learning.
Transition Project ‘All about Me’- started in Reception and continuing in Autumn 1 in Year 1.

21. What you can do now.
Over the summer holidays it is important that your children reads regularly, this can include their favourite books, recipes, road signs, instructions for games.
Visit bug club and teach your monster to read.
Count in steps of 1, 2, 5, and 10.
Recognise shapes and numbers around the house and in the local area.
Practise writing their full name and other familiar words
Collect things that are special about your child- bag
