Welcome Parents! Here is a little about me. Grew up in San Marcos, CA. Attended Richland Elementary K-5 Woodland Park Middle School 6-7 San Marcos Middle School 8 Mission Hills High School 9-12 Class of ’09 Attended University of Montana, Palomar, and Santa Clara University. I played both Football and Baseball in college at the Division 1 level. Majored in Mathematics I Coach Varsity Quarterbacks and I am the JV head baseball coach here on campus. My Mother (Peggy Zapata) has worked with SMUSD for 23 years. In case you recognized the last name.

What I Believe… Students who have positive role models both at home and at school are the most likely to succeed. I want them to have fun (kahoot, games, etc.) I do not want them ever to feel discouraged An environment that discourages Fimage (Fear of Image) and encourages individuality is the best place to learn. Anyone that seeks help and shows consistent effort will always be successful.

Algebra 1 & Common Core We have been transitioning to the new state standards for mathematics across our district. In the 2016-2017 school year, our Algebra 1 course became fully aligned to the Common Core state standards. In addition to the content standards math students learn, all students (K-12) also have Standards for Mathematical Practice they are to engage in every year. This means your student will likely begin to feel more responsible for communicating their mathematical thinking, not just an answer or procedure… Specifically our tests will be a combination of test and task. Student’s will be asked to explain their reasoning more often.

Keeping Track of Participation. An idea made popular by Rick Morris. Each student has a flashcard with their name on it. On each flashcard I will keep track of their participation during lecture Ex.) + for on task and correct answer. for on task but incorrect answer. P for on phone not paying attention. 0 not paying attention. The goal is not to call only on students that are not paying attention but to check for understanding and for who is following along.

Grading in the Math Department. Algebra 1 The weighted scale is as follows: Quizzes 30% Tests 60% Final Exam 10% Grading Scale: 100% - 90% A 89% - 80% B 79% - 70% C 69% - 50% D 49% - 0% F

Homework Policy… I will assign homework basically everyday. Homework will be checked daily but is not truly due until the day before the test. I want to let the students take ownership of when they do their homework. However, I will only show them the answers to the homework the day after it is assigned. The incentive for students to do their homework. If the student wants to do a retake one of the ways to do that is to complete all homework. ** Quiz and Test Questions are also often chosen from homework assignments

What does replacement look like? Let’s say a student’s scores for a unit look like this. Quiz 1 – 60% Quiz 2 – 68% Unit Test – 80% NOW: Quiz 1 – 60% -------> 80% Quiz 2 – 68% -------> 80% The student has demonstrated mastery of the content and we want the grade to reflect this mastery of the Algebra 1 content.

Test Retakes in Algebra 1 In order to retake a test the student must accomplish 1 of 3 things. 1.) They must have completed all homework for the Unit and have a filled stamp sheet or make up any of the assignments they were missing. 2.) They must have completed all of the Khan academy practice for that unit (from our class website). 3.) Complete Test corrections at one of the specified tutoring times. Students may earn up to 100% on a retake but regardless of whether or not their score is an improvement the retake score will be their final score.

What you can do! Find out their assignments by checking their stamp sheet. Algebra 1 Check Class Website Look over the assignment to check for completion. Are they done? Can they explain to me what they are doing? Help them review for Tests and Quizzes.
