1 S.O.M.E. Physics Joshua Bilak
Welcome to Open House S.O.M.E. Physics Joshua Bilak

2 Philosophy of the course
Understanding by Design Big Ideas Essential Questions Enduring Understanding Modeling Work with experiments, demonstrations, and data on a daily basis

3 Grading / Expectations
Rubric used to evaluate performance for about 25% of the grade. Used of labs Used to help students get better over time Helps students reflect upon their work Designed to let students focus on their understanding of content. 50% of grade depends on tests, quizzes, and exams. Participation & Discussion are key. Homework will not be given too often, but will be essential to the flow of lessons.

4 Timeline Sound Electricity/Magnetism Optics/Light Blending of topics
Now until end of September Electricity/Magnetism All of October into early November Optics/Light Remainder of course Blending of topics No abrupt transitions Constant Connections

5 How can parents help? Encourage organization by providing 3-ring binder Contact me: Anyone a professional in the areas of Music, Electronics, or Optics? I would love a guest speaker on the topics of this course

6 What are the skills necessary to succeed?
Effort & Attendance =Good Grade Critical Thinking & Participation

7 How students learn the most challenging context?
Use class time wisely Challenge themselves Take lessons and assignments seriously Seek extra help Have confidence

8 Tutoring I would be glad to tutor any student directly before or after school or during my plan period. As long as student sets up a time with me beforehand I encourage students to get extra help in math and/or physics as needed to get more out of my course. Please share any concerns you may have with me or request extra help for your child via

12 Timeline Unit 1- About Science Unit 2- Forces & Motion
Mrs. Duda may return to teach the second semester of this course This Fall Unit 1- About Science What is physics? How to do science like a scientist Unit 2- Forces & Motion What makes things move? How do things change speed? Unit 3- Momentum & Energy What happens when object collide? Unit 4- Circular Motion & Gravitation The major second semester topics are: Sound Optics Electricity Magnetism

17 Translation to College
Most students (depending on major) will need to take an introductory physics course, therefore: My goal to teach students more about how to approach physics and the sciences as apposed to placing an emphasis on details. Focus on Big Ideas and Deep Understanding I would like to prepare students to leave high school feeling ready to tackle a more math intensive physics course. I would like students to understand the importance of science in everyday life and become better at critical thinking and problem solving for whatever they choose to apply themselves next.
